Well Ive been clearing a place for my leeks Ive removed a pieris that isn't doing very well so Ive put that in a pot if it doesn't recover then its binned! Ive moved a fuchsia forward and we chopped a sucker that was coming from my cherry tree it was massive nearly as wide as the trunk O.H. had to saw through it both sides as it was developing into a tree on its own!! I made J go in though as he was feeling weak so I packed in and made him a sweet drink I thought the garden can wait. And if Jad reads this Keep Stum!! ;D You dint know anything!!

You've been busy Maggy, it's great when the weather allows us to start into the garden after winter. Most of what I've been doing is tidying and cleaning up outside, I don't know where the dust and leaves etc... come from. I intend to do some sowing over the next few days, may even plant out some seedlings which I've been hardening off.

I watered everything in the little greenhouses with weak tomato feed, think I've lost most of my over wintered pelagoniums and fuchsias - it was just too cold. I planted 2 tubs of early potatoes and 2 tubs of lates - when I say tubs they are actually huge pieces of plastic pipe cut into rings. It is an experiment to see if they escape the attentions of the rabbits being up off the ground a bit - or maybe rabbits don't even eat potato leaves . I also potted on my cucumbers and some cosmos candy stripe and OH and I planted our new apple trees. Time for a cup of tea now!

today I got the grass cut and tidied up the borders. I've put the supports around the delphinium which have grown about 6 inches these past couple of weeks. I got some of the beetroot sowed in the new veg plot. I even got out the scissors to trim the edges. There's something to be said for having a small garden 'tho.. it did'nt take that long.

I have been digging out a border that has been planted for 20 years! Overgrown, too bitty, too many weeds! I was going to turn it into my veg bit but I'm not sure if it will get enough sun - it's eastish facing and gets the sun in the mid morning as it comes round and part of it at the edge will get it when the sun is higher in the sky. Oh well, needed doing anyway.
I've left a mahonia in there at the moments because it has flowers on it and there are bees around and it covers the hole in the fence! The fence on that side needs replacing in the next few weeks which is why I thought I would make a start clearing that side of the garden before the big boots trample everything!

I've dug up more brambles and nettles - don't know if it would just be easier to hire a rotavator and clear that bit of garden but it might just chop the weeds up into 1000 more pieces.

How big an area is it Jasmine? Have you got anybody to lend a hand (she says from the safety of Birmingham ) I've been sowing today. started my raised salad bed, 1/2 salad mix, spring onions, butter head lettuce, and spinach beet. the other half will have radish and beetroot. I sowed A pot of carrots, and dotted 1/2 an onion set around the garden. Sprinkled a packet of Californian Poppy's about. (once the hens were away) Sown some busy Lizzie's, azaleas, Hollyhocks, begonia, and a mix of sunflowers in the GH too.

Goodness me Em, you have been busy. The californian poppies will add lots of colour to your garden this summer. I've no idea what spinach beet is Em, is it a kind of spinach or a kind of beet? Jasmine as you say, the rotavator will only chop up the weeds, it's hard work but worth while you doing it.

OH lends a hand when he is around Emsey but that isn't very often because of work. I don't mind doing it - it is quite satisfying really but I think I am just going to have to do it slowly and steadily. There is no rush. It is a strip of garden we got back when we had a huge and unmanageable hedge taken down at the bottom of the garden - it must be about 40 ft by 15 ft but it isn't as bad as it sounds as the bit that was stump ground isn't too bad. Will do some photos Maggy - just keeping my brambles and nettles to myself at the moment! I shall forget the rotavator LG - weeds out first I guess.

I do think, doing it by hand will yield the best results, and like you say a bit at a time, leave the stumps till OH is about, we've a long weekend coming up I spend a good half an hour trying to get a 4ft sapling of something or other out today, I'm the end I got a saw, sawed it down to ground level, still couldn't get it out, its flush up against a fence panel which doesn't help. In the end i've left it

Spinach beet is a nice mix between the two LG It looks like beetroot leaves with the red veins. Its a fast growing crop and cut and come again, if you cut the outer leaves while they're small they are nice in a salad, if you let them grow a bit, you can boil them and they taste like spinach. A very nice crop to grow.

In the end i've left it I had to do that in the end Emsey with some hedge roots in another part of the garden (I sound like a manic hedge ripper outterer) but I got the stump down to ground level and then covered the rest up in the hope that the root would rot away. Nothing has sprouted from that spot so maybe it is working.

I pulled out 3 little saplings today, OH thinks i'm some sort of mad tree slayer, if he had his way the garden would be an abouretum ;D I'll keep an eye on the spot. We have another of these saplings flush against the opp fence its growing through paving : and its about 7ft, I really don't know how to handle that. Glad you've had a nice day in the garden too Blacky. could that white flowering bush be a viburnum ( think thats how you spell it) ? Just a guess as they have some at the kids school and they smell Devinne.

Fingers crossed that nothing sprouts up Jasmine. Blacky it's great to be able to get out and start cutting back and getting to know the garden again after winter is'nt it. Em an abouretum would be fantastic with all different coloured trees but they'd have to be the right ones would'nt they.
