Just as a 'btw', wasn't that a handy tip on GW on Friday about dividing up a tray with cardboard to make modules? As usual, it's so obvious you wonder why you never thought of it before.....I need lots more modules for my Sunflower seeds. I shall have to rescue some cardboard from the recycling bin tomorrow....

I seem to be waffling overmuch on this thread but as I've completely run out of room now I shall be quieter now.... ;D I spent the morning sowing more seeds, I still have more but I shall have to wait until I can shift some to outside now... I sowed: Centaurea X 2 Blue and Dark Red Hollyhock 'Antwerp mixed' Achillea 'Moonwalker' Baptisia australis Sanguisorba (another attempt) Poppy 'Pink Paeony' Millet 'Purple Majesty' Sunflowers - 5 packets of assorted heights and colours Rudbeckia 'Goldsturm' I still have to sow Mick's cactus seeds and find space to sow cabbages and all the beans.......oh dear....

I have some poppies to sow...is it OK to sow then in trays then? they aren't the huge oriental type (no room) but sowing in a tray would be much easier for me....

Everyone says that Poppies hate being transplanted but I always sow mine in modules so I can plant them as plugs later on - they don't seem to mind...

I am babbling again : but isn't Nature amazing?? My seeds are thrusting up already - the Centaurea and Sunflowers so fast I think you could almost see them grow! It never ceases to amaze me - eeeh, I love it! And the Purple Millet has germinated too - which is nice - apparently finches love the seed heads. Oh, you just cannot be miserable at this time of year, can you? (As long as you sow seeds, that is..)

I sowed some more stuff this morning: Purple Climbing French Beans Runner Beans - Red Knight, Painted Lady and a golden leaved one called Sun Bright Peas - Kelvedon Wonder Tomatoes - Garetenpearle and Gardeners Delight (resowed a try for eldest's Nursery children - I think they buried their seeds too deep : I don't want them to be disappointed ;D) Chillis - Anaheim And I repotted the Cucumbers, Aubergines, Melons and the solitary Pepper, also some very leggy Gardener's Delight Tomatoes which I hope will recover.... I have filled up every space available in the conservatory by shunting all the pot plants together. I discovered that one of my carniverous plants is flowering too - the Nepenthes - it has a very pretty red flower towering over it - s'gorgeous.... I hope the weather remains OK - I have GOT to get stuff outside into the PT soon..... Shutting up now..... ;D

I got up at the crack of dawn this morning as I have to feed my sister's horse this week as well as everyone else - I sowed my cabbages, leeks and some Lettuce plants before 6am! Now I am going to try and get the ground ready to plant the Brussel Sprouts and the Globe Artichokes, build a makeshift cold frame out of blocks, bricks and an old patio door and see if I can't make a start on the new beds for the root vegetables. Then I shall mainly be collapsed for the rest of the day.... ;D

Well, on Sunday I pricked out (what a strange phrase that is) all the tomato seedlings (I have to supply half the office), the black eyed Susans (Thunbergias) and the dwarf sweet peas into hanging baskets. Very satisfying Oh, and last Friday I sowed Avonias and Staepeliads and by Sunday the Avonias were already up. I'll put a link for them on the cactus board later. 4P - I'll put a couple of those tablets in the post to you today =- the ones to stop damping off. They're called Chinosol if you want to look them up.

I had a seed planting session yesterday, an attempt to keep my mind occupied. I planted: Another succesion of Broad Beans Dwarf Beans; Ferrari Florence Fennel; zefo fino Onions; Utah Jumbo White Sweetcorn; True Gold Pumpkin; Snowman And I think that's it for now, they're all on top of my 4ft fish tank for some bottom heat to help get them going. I've got to raid the Parrot and the cockatiel food for some sunflower seeds and then plant them too. I grew some from cockatiel seed when I was younger, 7ft sunflowers with the heads as big as dinner plates! So I thought I'd give it another go for the giant sunflower competition. I think we should do a giant pumpkin comp too.

Yet another afternoon pricking out and potting up...I'm only keeping the 5-7 strongest seedlings of each variety...and have given a fair amount away already (so much for selling stuff) as it saves me compost and room...a few people I know have a GH each...so I've given them little 3" pots with 3 seedlings in so that they can pot up themselves...also gave away all the cape gooseberry, tomato, pepino, chilli, pepper and cucumber plants that I don't intend to keep..altho I'm keeping one or two spares for 4P ;D

I've now pricked mine out but they are very small (back in the cold frame)...be patient. I've had problems sowing them in previous years... : but I seem to have got it right this year....good luck.

Thanks for all the tips :-) The growing instructions said 2 weeks in a polythene bag at warm temps (about70f) then put in a fridge for another 2 weeks and prick out as they germinate. They have been in the fridge for 3 weeks nothing showing as yet. I check daily and have sown the remainder of the seeds yesterday. Here's hoping. I grew them years ago without a problem
