I'm growing the parsnip Lancer which is ideal for a container. I sowed them December 28th and transplanted them in their loo roll inners into their container a couple of weeks ago. I intend to sow some more not that I've found a bag of loo roll inners I'd forgotten about.

Good em but they are really slow growers! a few of mine came through about 2 weeks ago but they are still tiny! LadyG do you stand the pots outside once they have come? mine are still in the cold greenhouse Im a bit warey of putting them outside we might get more snow ofr frost and that might kill them off ! do you think?

Hi Maggy, yes they're outside. I sowed them into the toliet roll inners and popped them into the mini greenhouse. Then when the seed leaves were through a good while I potted them into the big pot they're now in and sitting outside on a brick. We might indeed get snow or frost but if I need to I can cover them with a bit of bubblewrap.

I sowed my parsnips in one of my raised beds on February 7th. I am trying White Gem this year as the root is supposed to be shorter than the ones I grew last year (think they were gladiator). Anyway, they were so hard to get out of the ground without breaking that I decided to try a different sort. There are no seedlings showing at the moment.

It's good to know you have them on the go Jasmine. It'll be a few weeks before you see them coming up but I know you'll be patient. I'll sow some more soon, direct where they are to grow I think.

Sowed some more parsnip lancer for pots today in toilet roll inners, they are last years seed so I've sown 2 to a roll and can thin if I need to be. They're happily sitting in the mini greenhouse.

I don't really like slug pellets, but we needed them at the Lottie and these were left over. I've only used them in the GH and in these high pots, and when they're gone, their gone

I drink a lot of coffee Em and always make it fresh, so every week or so I have a collected good jugfull of grounds which I put around anything I need to keep the slugs and snails off. I do also go out looking to see if I can find any S&S hiding under leaves, bricks pots etc... I try not to buy pellets at all but if I have to I'll buy growing success, they're a lot more expensive but kind to animals and birds. I'd only have to buy once a year anyhow. The used coffee bags are free at starbucks too.

Mine is unused LadyG !! its what has been in my container and its too old to use I buy it and forget it then end up throwing it out, I read that slugs wont cross it so I thought thank goodness I can use it for something! do you think I should pour boiling water over it then ? or will it work unused!!
