Oh.........sorry but I loved it. I thought the gardens by that man Barrigan put Duarmuid Gavin well and truly in his place and I like Monty Don very much. He once sent me a very personal email on an Easter Sunday in answer to one I'd sent him about an article he'd written in the Observer - he was really kind and warm. I won't hear a word against him now ;D I wasn't expecting any response at all. I really appreciated the fact that he'd bothered, and in his own home time too. Didn't you even enjoy the cacti?

I'm probably being very unfair. It's just his TV persona that puts me off and I always think Berryfields is a disaster. The Barrigan garden was wonderful - I do agree there and the cacti were fine. I will look more closely next week - I wsa dead tired after my exciting day and perhaps not concentrating as well as I should.

He's not the same as GH or AT, though I still like him, but part of the problem with Berryfields, I think, is that it's not Monty's own garden. He is only there about three hours a week, so can't do it justice, IMHO. I recorded the programme last night, so haven't watched it yet. Keith

I like him. I think he comes aross as someone who loves the garden, loves the environment, and loves people. He seems very warm, genuine and kind.
Of TV presenters the worst I think I can say of any is that they would not be my preferred choice of entertainment. I cannot think of any TV presenter that I can truly say I dislike. I really don't feel I know them well enough.

Just pinging this to remind people that the programme is repeated tonight at 7pm on BBC2. I recommend it - I thoroughly enjoyed it. So good to watch a gardening programme with such a lot of thought provoking content in it.

So good to watch a gardening programme with such a lot of thought provoking content in it. Especially the PINK walls!!!! Keith Well, it's not a space I would feel comfortable in for very long but I liked those gardens. It makes you realise whom Dermuid Gavin was inspired by as a designer anyway! And those gardens were very much a part of their location weren't they? The quality of the light and the amount of sunlight hours were essential to their success I'd have thought. It just doesn't work in the same way in our more temperate, softer climate. But it's good to have your perceptions challenged I think. I shall watch it again tonight to see what I missed during the first viewing. I'm very surprised you didn't enjoy it Cheery - do tell me why! It's a shame when the choice of presenter spoils a programme. Personally I'm not keen on Alan Titchmarsh as I find his avuncular style really irritating and patronising. I try and ignore him though when he's doing a series like that one about the British countryside as the imagery was beautiful. I have always enjoyed Monty's approach and I loved his writing in the Observer magazine so his presence is not a problem for me in this series.

G*d only knows who inspired DG. He has done a few good designs, but on the whole he just makes me think he is in it to shock people. Keith

I shall try an persuade the kids to let me watch it in peace tonight. I did catch a glimps of the cacti garden though and thought that looked good. - What an amazing walk through of the very tall cacti. - Wouldn't like to walk through it drunk though. ouch. ;D

Managed to watch most of it ;D What did everyone think of the Edward James Garden, set in the jungle, It had an almost surreal look about it but blended in great with all the plants around which I really liked. I'm surprised that they are going to Australia next week I thought they would have continued up into America and Canada first. But I will still be watching.

I really enjoyed the second programme although it wasn't quite as rich in variety as the first one. Still very interesting and beautiful. The gardens were an interesting mix of traditional European and native plants. Some of these people are sooooo wealthy though aren't they? Dear me, I have always thought that anyone with huge acreage and oodles of cash should be able to make a decent garden! The elderly Dame Elizabeth was a good old girl wasn't she? If she can tootle around at such a sprightly 99yrs I should really stop whinging about my aches and pains and get on with the digging! The programme is repeated tonight, if anyone is interested.

I never understand why it is that when we are desperate for a bit of gardening in winter, that they take it off.
When it comes back it's the same old, same old....
Why can't they take one subject and do a programme on it e.g Alpines?

I know! It's soo stoopid isn't it? A series of informative, interesting programmes about a different subject each week. It's not rocket science to think of these things but no one appears to be able to do so on the TV - do other terrestrial channels even have Gardening programmes any more? Apart from bloody awful makeover and lifestyle wannabees rubbish... When you think of the popularity of gardening in this country, it's astonishing we are so badly served by the telly..eeh, it makes me want to rip a tissue..if only I ruled the world......

I think we should petition the BBC! But how many of us would sign? I nominate Mick to write the demands.
