How's about we start a tv gardening thread...so that we can discuss the current shows? Tonight there are 2 on BBC2 starting at 8pm 'A Passion for Gardening' followed by 'Gardeners World' at 8.30pm.
I also watch the UKtv Gardening channel on sky when I get the chance, and can rip the tv remote control from OH's sweaty paws.... ;D

Well cheery I didnt think much of the passion for gardening prog;and it was the last in the series of gardeners world I was supprised to see Monty shallow planting tulips! I thought if you didnt plant them deep enouh they would come up blind without any flowers! I would love to have enogh space t0 plant raspberries but they do take up a lot of space! when I was young my Dad used to grow rasps in a line of about 15'x5' and raspberry pie was my favourite. ;D

But even then I would probably end up spending it on something more essential .....

I wasn't that impressed with the P-for-P prog either maggyd...and as for GW...it's just too short. I know that there's usually a GW Yuletide special...but I hope that they put other gardening progs on to keep us happy in the long winter months when all we can do is plan, and worry. :

I did watch both programmes but don't remember much about them....was the P for P programme the one with the bit about Feargal Whatisname's Verbascum trial or was that GW? Anyway I enjoyed them both although obviously neither made a big impression on me! : The GW season seems VERY short to me.........and I am always slightly annoyed at how incredibly POSH the RHS trial people are....do they really exist or are they upper class robots just brought out for the judging season?? People don't really speak like that do they? His little girl is a sweetpea though. Oh, and Monty's square metre method of planting tulips seemed a teeny bit anal to me.......just chuck 'em and plant 'em in the ground, for heaven sakes!

Actually, I was thinking the same thing on friday about starting a TV gardening thread. Great minds etc. I just can't stand Monty Don and Gardeners World now. It doesn't vaguely look like a garden to me. A shadow of Alan T's series. And what happened to wotserface with the wobbly bits? Haven't seen her for ages.

If so you need to make an appointment with her social secretary to see her these days, she has become a snob and too big for her own boots now IMO. I do miss Rachel de Thame though I liked her very much. You've misspelt boots.......

I like uktv gardens, many of the shows are new to me, its good the way most of the programs are repeated at the time of year they were filmed, very handy. UKTV Gardens is OK, but the programmes are shortened by about five minutes, very infuriating. I remember one Groundforce, that not one plant was mentioned, cos there was more about the hardlandscaping than the plants. It was one I had seen, like most, but still annoying! I wrote to them and asked why they can't do the same as UKGOLD, when they have 40 minutes for a 30 minute programme. Surely it would be better. I never got a reply. I have kept the odd one on DVD and when reduced down they normally are about 22/23 minutes long. On BBC GW are at least 28/29 minutes long! We're being done here. Saw a The Plantsman yesterday or was it the day before. Chris Collins was doing thugs as plants. I would love to see the garden a few years later, it would need hacking down to keep in check!! Sorry turning into a rant here! Keith

Whilst not strictly speaking gardening I love the new Alan Titchmarsh programme about Britain.

And me (and I'm not keen on Mr Titchmarsh). The Woodland one this weekend was a delight from start to finish...made me want to rush up the track with Toby dog and start hugging trees ;D

Well, so what did you all think of the Gardener of the Year programme last night then? I thought it was much better than the last few years - at least they actually looked at people's gardening skills a bit more but I think it was rather unfair to have the speed trials against RHS experts times...and why couldn't we see a lot more of each contestant's gardens? And maybe a bit more of the entry selection process? I always want them to make two programmes at a leisurely pace rather than one at breakneck speed. I enjoyed it though.

According to AG magazine Christine Walkden is to be giving us all gardening tips on BBC's 'The One Show' on a regular basis. Now I know that she isn't everybody's cup of tea, but good luck to her.

I agree! I find her chatty style a bit irritating and she is obsessed with eating but she's a really experienced and very practical gardener (and she's sooo not into 'lifestyle' stuff it makes a really pleasant change!)
