Mrs C has just rung to tell me that the gales have decimated my tomatoes. At least one has been snapped in half. Obviously theye were all top heavy with fruit.
I'll sort it out when I get home.

They weren't too bad. A fair few came off but Mrs c was confused - the one that seemed to have snapped in half was actually a long shoot I took off this morning and just dropped on the ground. The green ones are all on the windowsill now.

The Gardener's Delight in the PT are cropping really heavily now..too many to cope with really.. : Middlest loves them so I picked a VAST number for her - she lives in a flat so has no garden at all. She seemed pleased so I picked another boxful for her when I went back to pick smallest up! ;D For some reason she wasn't quite so pleased second time round.....heehee.. I haven't grown any courgettes this year FC - just because I always end up with huge marrows no one eats (OH hates them - what a surprise..). Schools don't like them for Harvest Festival now either I thnk it's about time the marrow got back into fashion.....someone tell Nigel Slater and Jamie Oliver!

My OH does a lovely dish using marrows or courgettes involving soy sauce, sugar and mixed spice when we've got some. He slices them very thinly and cooks them in the wok with those ingredients - I love it!

Yesterday was pork chops with potatoes and spinach (really delicious) from the garden and carrots grown in the old window boxes. They are excellent but didn't have much flavour.
I've lifted the red onions but they are fairly small. The ordinary onions are better.
A decent warm spell would be useful.

I was very pleased with the size shape of our pentland javlin spuds, and they were good croppers, but I was a bit disapointed with the taste? Any body else try thease? Debi, I keep forgetting to ask you what you thought.

Debi, I keep forgetting to ask you what you thought. They should be a nice tasty, waxy potato, suitable as a salad potato. Next year save all your toe-nail clippings and add them to the compost. That might help the flavour.

I was disappointed with the flavour of my carrots - suggestions for tasty carrots? If you have a pile of ripe socks - wash them in warm soapy water. Water the carrots with the green/grey liquid. Warning - if the socks are overly brittle, run them under a warm tap for a few seconds. Snapping dry brittle socks can damage the fibres! This is especially so if you keep your socks in the fridge.

Which carrot did you sow this year Mick? I always sow the chanteney ones as I think they taste the best.. I had a good rootle round the veggie garden for an hour of Sunday morning and it's been a bad year for me, generally. The onions and garlic are awful - no garlic at all and very few decent onions.... the runners are going to seed already despite me picking them off daily, they're going off very quickly. And the greens and beetroot have been poor too. On the plus side, the spuds have done well, the leeks look fine and the globe artichokes are growing like stink. I know my garden has been pretty weedy this year but it doesn't usually slow the veg down too much....it's been a worse year than usual, without doubt...shame...

I don't remember now 4P...
Onions certainly not as good as last year.
Beetroots OK for me and the murphies are fine.

The green tomatoes have all started ripening quite quickly this week.
It's all fortuitous or because I've changed the feeding regime.
How are everbody elses? Outdoor toms by the way.

Indoor, outdoor all green I threw a bunch of bananas into the GH but they've done no good so far, I've taken a lot of foliage from the plants too, still nothing.

Maybe it's the change of feed regime.
I switched to Chempak no 4 from no 8 and instead of feeding weekly I've fed quarter strength every day.
