Patience is the watchword with these. Rooting will probably improve once night temperatures increase. Don't overwater them at present.

Went to Kew yesterday and delivered the Stapeliads. Everything went well but the problem is a new appointment and the guy in charge of Tropical Arid (where I go) has to do everything by the book and I have to complete forms if I donate and forms if I take plants away. Anyway, he was extremely helpful and the best one I have dealt with there by some way. Had a long chat with him and the students over their Stapeliad problem and I have agreed to write cultivation notes for them. He also let me choose cuttings which he and a student took for me and I came away with 20 Aloe cuttings together with all the collection history for each one - some of them collected by pretty famous people in the Cactus and Succulent world. All in all a really excellent day.
Incidentally SL I think I sent you Aloe claviflora which Kew don't have and were pleased to get a seedling from me. It's quite a rare Aloe apparently.

They seem ok the watering is less of a problem now, anyway, and most have obvious roots.
Without tempting fate I think I may have a success story to tell ;D

Mine are also doing better now that I have stopped poking them. Are you watering them with weak fertilizer though? Cat litter is not noted for its nutritious properties.

Suggest quarter strength. Half might be a bit strong if you are using it at every watering.

No, every other watering Mick, I thought I might be overdoing it at that! ;D I need instruction manuals I think. I might browse next door again later, are there any updates?

Not recently. Quarter strength at every watering will be fine. Use plain water occasionally to flush through.

I have now taken all the seedlings out of the plastic bags as there is nowhere in the greenhouse that is adequately shady and I don't want them to "boil in the bag". They are now in trays and I water regularly from below with cold boiled water. If they dry out now they will be lost. Fantastic germination this year.

I have an Epiphyllum. These are really tropical cacti with very glamorous flowers but pretty dull plants. They grow perched on trees and rocks alomg with orchids and bromeliads and have been extensively hybridised for their flowers.
I found this one in a pot in a fireplace in a pub in Cambridge which I was visiting years ago with my dear old Dad. For a change, the stems were interesting but nobody know what the flower was like. I took a cutting and rooted it and the flowers turned out to be pretty spectacular, pink, about 8" long and 5" wide. It is a fair size now and has been in the same pot for about 10 years which is completely falling apart. In October I drag it into the green house and in April I drag it back out again. This year it has a phenomenal number of buds 100+ and will be absolutely spectacular in a few weeks.
I know I have problems posting pictures but we are really going to try on this one.

Oh good! ;D Although, I do think you need a home computer Mick, it would change your life, you could keep an online record of all your Cacti, flowering times, (with pics ) and be able to access it wherever you were.........

So my Tesco value camera won't work then? I dunno. Do you suspect it to be broken? If not it proably will work.
