I haven't seen any squirrels around for a long time. And as for the beast -Yuk I don't suppose there is anyway of protecting the bulbs from it is there.

Oh, I LOVE Fritillarias and those Crown Imperials are really amazing aren't they? Wow! I went mad and bought 3 Fritillaria persicas last Autumn, put them in a pot but only 1 has come up . This makes it officially the most expensive bulb I've ever bought.......I also potted up 300 F. meleagris in small pots (3per pot) for selling at an Easter sale (unusual bit of forward planning for me) and it looks as if only half of them have made it . I don't know if it's me but that seems pretty poor. Maybe that's why they are so expensive.....they are so beautiful though aren't they?

My big frits didn't survive the winter but the Persican (?) ones seem to be coming up, and one Uva whatever has appeared in a pot of thrift.

Sun Flower - Giant single - erm i think, or it could be Little Leo. My giant single grew to about 9ft last year, not a record breaker but still good and difficult to measure. Little Leo grew to about 5ft. - I would love to find some that only grow to about 2ft high. It would fit in perfectly with my hot border.

I grew some of the dwarf Sunflowers 'Sunspot' last year Ali. They were really sweet, under 24" tall and bright yellow. I can't remember which seed supplier they came from I'm afraid but I'm sure googling the name would bring something up.

I would love to grow sunflowers like that Ali Im no good at it though! they always look scruffy or dont come at all! Whats the secret? No secret Maggyd I just sowed loads singularly in pots (the kids did most) kept them in the greenhouse and let them grow. Then the slugs started to attack them so I put slug pellets round them. When I planted them in the ground the slugs had another go Grrrrrr so out came the pellets again. Can't remember how many I sowed altogether, but think I had 8 plants in the end that survived being eaten. Thanks BM, did you start a thread ?

Oh thats it then if the slugs like them they wont stand a chance in our garden : I cant put anything down because of Teddy he would eat slug pellets! the only way I can control them is to go out with a plastic bag and a torch on a night, we get over-run.

It may be an old wives tale, but it seems to work.
