Mine look great ATM, I'm scared to put them out tho, But I am formulating a hen proof plan, involving trellis edging and old plastic bottles, it isn't pretty.

You are all weeks ahead of me - I've only sown mine this weekend....never mind, I have the famously wide, warm and sunny skies of Norfolk on my side - I'll catch you all up, you just wait! ;D

You are still ahead of me, babe, mine arent even sown yet. Go and pop some in some pots now sugar - it'll only take you a minute or two and you'll feel sooo much better! A few sown every day will get you motivated....I sit at the kitchen table and then sweep it all outside - much easier than messing about in the GH!

I've just sown Sunflower seeds, several varieties, for the grandsons, so will save the best one for this competition. When is the judging date - September?

my neighbour has some growing and they are 3 feet tall already, they always grow to be monsters and need support, the flowers always droop from being so heavy. i read about a competition last year on here for the tallest or it might have been garden world discussions.

I'm growing 2 varieties of sunflower but they're not the tall ones I'm afraid. I get irritated with them as they allus end up facing next door's garden.... : ....ent got room anyway. I'm growing 'vanilla ice' and 'velvet queen' this year...both grow about 5 ft. tall.

I'm growing 'vanilla ice' and 'velvet queen' this year...both grow about 5 ft. tall. Plant them on the other side of 'your' garden then!! My two are about 1ft tall atm. First sowings got neglected, cos of Stephen's knee problems, and didn't survive! So had to re sow some more, though I have had a few seedlings coming up, under the birdtable!! Maybe I should pot up a few!!

Been meaning to post on this thread for ages but keep forgetting : I have sown Teddy bear and Velvet queen this year, although I have not had a single VQ emerge the Teddy bears are doing well though. I also have at least 10 self sown giant sunflowers in my new border, they are in totally the wrong place ( right at the front of the border but I shall leave them there and see what happens. So far S & S's have left them alone. - figure that.

I was given a few seeds from SIL but they are a dwarf variety and F1 I think, almost chocolate colour, so I won't win any prizes for size, but looking forward to the flowers. They are about 9" tall, not yet planted out though.

My Russian Giants don't look too well in the GH - I think the frost has affected them.....so I don't think I'll win a prize either FC! I have sowed quite a lot of Sunflowers of differing heights and colours and the dwarfer ones seem to be unaffected by the dramatic drop in temperature last week - they are in the GH too : I was hoping to be able to plant them all out before GWL but I don't think it's likely now...I hope they survive my family looking after them for 2 weeks......

Mine are 2-3 ft tall now, alough they came from the same seed packet the larger one has different leaves to the other two, it has also developed some black spots on the upper leaves. I can see little flower heads forming.

Very important this To the highest point I would have thought Emsey. ;D I knew you were going to say that! Can we have a award for the thickest stalk? Is this a two horse race by the way? Myrtle how are your doing?

I hope the tall Sunflowers have survived the winds today. My dwarf ones were leaning a bit although staked.

Better than a one horse race. But isn't Myrtle in the running? Yes - well she was. Well, I'm running but you wouldn't call them tall by anyones measurements! What do you expect from me - they can't be too tall or I wouldn't reach to measure them! ;D
