OB--What is the best way to get stock please? From seed or the Garden Centre? I just have a small garden and I know Hellibores spread quite a bit--so you are so lucky having such a large garden--I am envious--Bigs

Or Friends Biggs if Ive got plantlets in the summer, I will pot a couple up for you if you like? they take a bit of time to get away that way or as I did ,I got that stinking hellebore from Morrisons reduced! the other one I bought from a garden centre it might be worth looking in the Longbeck nursery to see if he has any bargains I will look for you when Im passing.

It depends on what you want. Buying from a G/c or Nursery is best if you want a special type, say a double. But if all you want is the ordinary type, then you can get plants from almost any outlet. Seed gives a very variable result and you do need FRESH seeds sown in autumn to be sure of germination.

Thanks OB --for showing me your lovely Hellibores to whet my appitite----What a lovely selection-I hadnt realized how beautiful they are-- I am green with envy! I shall have to make my mind up as to which couple to get because I will only have room for a couple more. Maggs that is very kind of you--but dont go out of your way unless you are at the GC for anything else--Thanks-- Bigs.

Thanks OB for the great photo's. - isn't it a shame that most hang their heads down the colour's and centre's are so pretty. Have you ever been to Ashwood Nurseries off the Wolverhampton Rd. - I bet you have. They have a great collection there. And great gardens to look round too. I must go and have a look round again soon.

Ooh aren't they beautiful - lovely photogrpahs OB. I bought a pack of seeds last year and realised when I read the packet at home that it says for experts! That rules me out then. I'll check the date on the packet to see if it is still worth having a go.

Not really for experts, but I do suggest now soaking the seeds in tepid water with a little washing up liquid added. then sowing on Coffeee filter paper and putting in the Salad compartment of the fridge for a month before sowing in compost and then treating as normal seeds. They do not need any heat once sown though. Find Ashwoods incredibly expensive, we go, but never buy anything. The Nursery in Llandysul who supply the Welsh National Garden have as good a selection and are cheaper.

What beautiful flowers OB! My one and only hellebore's blooming its head off in a pot - in the garden the slugs hammer it. It's done the rounds, been in a pot, hanging basket, back in a pot, in the garden here and there - poor thing! And it hates the weather right now - how are yours faring with the snow, OB?

Snow and frost do not seem ot bother them and only H. thibetana gets really badly eaten, which is odd since it flowers in mid January! Strange I have not got a photo of H. niger anywhere.

Sorry Biggs. Only just managed to see your picture. That is H. argutifolius. Unlike H. hybrids you do not need to remove leaves, except when they die or are diseased. If happy it will seed itself around.
All the photos were taken in our garden.

They had some in Morrisons this morning reduced to £1.49 - not named as particular varieties though and not huge plants but they will grow (I resisted although I do want some, just not at the moment, need to do some sorting our first)

OB there are some smashing Hellibors in your collection, I really love the doubles you have. I saw one yesterday at the Nursery, I really like it but it was £8.50, is that reasonable. ? - This is the one. As you can see the name on the label says Double Helleborus - Credale strain.

That seems to be the price charged for them these days, unless you go to Ashwoods where they double the price just for their name!

Thanks OB I thought it was a bit straggly compared to others they were selling but they were £16. I really did like, so I might go back and get it - not sure what Hubby will say though. ;D
