Hi All Can't stop long but wanted to ask. How long do Hellibores flower for and what happens to the foliage in the summer does it die back or just stay green. I bought 2 last week and wanted to plant them out the front but is it worth it.? Many thanks. A. x

They are flowering NOW Ali and are beautiful. Then they bush up a bit and stay green. They self seed very freely too. Definitely worth it.

When the leaves start looking a bit shabby in early winter you cut them off which encourages new growth from the base Alicat. And the flowering period is fairly long. I personally think they are a must for any garden as they provide flowers in the winter/spring, evergreen and interesting leaves and self-seed beautifully. Enjoy yours!

You know it's all your fault - Yes you lot on the message boards I used to be such a good girl and not buy too much until I was co-hearsed into all these lovely flowers that I hadn't really noticed.
Plocket - I will enjoy them - Thank you.
SL - Goodluck ;D

My Hellebore do self seed but the Aurientalis I sowed in a pot last year just when the seeds were ripe. I left the pot untouched in a shady spot in the garden and noticed 5 out of 8 had come up. To be on the safe side I put them in my cold frame, pots freeze too easily. They are still alive and now get their first real leaves. I will plant them in a dryish spot in the garden later in the year. Fingers crossed with a little extra care to the soil they might survive in my garden. Dutchy

H. thibetanus is in flower, but the x hybridus are still just in bud. H. foetidus is just about open and H. argutifolius are too. H. purpurescens is just showing. H, niger is almost open. Have got others but off hand cannot remember the names. Seedlings are funny, I can manage the ones I collect and sow in pots, but the self seeded ones never seem to survive the move. Received advice is to leave them in situ until they have two sets of true leaves, so I am trying that this year. We had a really good seed set on H. x ballardii one year, like over 100 seedlings, not one survived the move, sad really,

All the ones mentioned plus 1 with a fancy name. Of x hybridus, say about 100 clumps. Photos are harder, will have to go digging in the folders.
