I know but it's leeks tomorrow!! My back is OK really - I just ache a bit - my jaw hurts from gritting my teeth lopping all the big branches I don't suppose it'll stop me talking.....or eating either! Take care, too much work and your back will end up really bad, then you wont be able to Leek will you?

Managed to get 'some' bulbs planted yesterday, but only about a quarter done. Oh well, like SL said before, there is always tomorrow! Keith

That's another one off my list - planted up the bed by the Beach Hut, under the silver birches this morning. Obviously had to clear up a lot of nettles and pull out miles of thick yellow nettle roots but I've planted Muscari and Crocus in the ground so they can spread and also put another 3/4 pots of Daffodils and Narcissus in too. Also cleared the border opposite (also nettle ridden) and planted Wallflowers and a few very tall daffs in the ground and some of the littler pretty silvery white ones in pots. I am glad I've done that as these are the beds we can see out of the windows so they will look cheerful next Spring. I have some home grown Primroses to plant in too but I ran out of energy.

It wasn't all that big a job Cheery - it just needed doing and has been niggling at me. I'm terrible at getting jobs done at the right time, that's partly why I put a lot of bulbs in pots, so I can clear the ground they are supposed to be growing in as and when I have time. I also cleared up the patio a bit. I should have attacked the little beds by the conservatory door as they are completely overgrown with Ox Eye Daisy and Feverfew but I just couldn't summon up the energy. And then the little bed round the corner has a dead Daphne in it and is covered in Bugle and nasty Saponaria and needs sorting out.......

I need to get on with the Autumn clear up, I usually have it all done by now, I really need to kick it up a gear, but cant seem to get motivated.

I know exactly what you mean - I am on a bit of a go slow. I did that stuff today so I don't have to look at it being a real mess all through the winter. I moved lots of my terracotta pots about too and got cross as I found 3 of them have fallen to bits...and they were guaranteed frost proof.....that makes me cross (and obviously I lost the receipt months ago.)....I think the warm weather has stopped us realising that it IS the middle of October - all my apple trees are still green even though the Sumac and Birches etc are turning now. Very odd.

I have English and French lavender in bloom again, I was going to cut them down but they were covered in buds, and now they look better than they did in the summer.

I need to get on with the Autumn clear up, I usually have it all done by now, I really need to kick it up a gear, but cant seem to get motivated. Blame it on the weather, SL!! I got more of my bulbs done and sorted out a few pots. Took out the two sunflowers that maybe I should have done BEFORE I took those pictures!! I still can't believe how many cerinthe seedling I have found, even in the grass!!! There must have been close on 100, if not more! I also did a bit of weeding and general soil sprucing up! Will do more of the tidying out this week, weather permitting. Forecast on Teletext (and my Dad when he phoned tonight!) is for a cold spell this week! Keith

I'm slowly getting through my list...just been hacking at the mixed hedge at the bottom of the veggie garden this morning. I have barrowed out all the trimmings and cleared a patch of the ground ready for digging. My OH is going to have to chainsaw the rest of the hedge for me - it's miles too big for me and my loppers. It will be fun digging out the roots...and I discovered that nettle roots have travelled all under my asparagus bed again in the last month despite me clearing it as well as I could. So much for black plastic, weed suppressants and bark chippings.....I shall HAVE to touch weed kill it - I cannot have it in my precious asparagus bed next year....

Quite an easy one for me - collecting the windfalls and making even MORE apple sauce to freeze. I do a large saucepan at a time which is about all I can stand at one time. It's ridiculous - we have an apple tree full of apples but we've hardly got any to munch, we timed it ALL wrong this year, started picking them too early, decided to leave them a while and the next thing we know zillions of windfalls everywhere. We've still got demijohns of apple wine from last year and chutney galore. The wine's a toecurler and quite deadly, no more this year!!!!!! The tree's getting a good prune this Winter.

Cutting down a hedge, (cant find my reciprocating saw) trimming back all the shrubs, raking up a billion leaves...... still have to plant some bulbs I forgot how busy Autumn could be.

Well yes, I have to admit, and I suppose I kinda enjoy moaning about it too We all do I think! I draw the line at near frostbitten hands when it's really cold and I decide that sticking them in a bag of compost's a good idea. ;D My moan at the moment is my lovely chickens - they're STILL hanging around and when I go out there they start making loads of noise and mobbing me. I've got loads to do out there but THEY'RE patrolling, it's all tactical manoeuvres on both sides. ;D Or is that just a terrible excuse to put things off? :

Could do with a chainsaw to demolish our hedge, perhaps OH should hire one - getting rid of the hedge will cause us the biggest headache - I guess you will burn yours 4P? I will save the big bits to burn indoors and then we have a bonfire I'm afraid...have you considered a wood chipper The witch? I used my Dad's last year and it has made really good bark but it was too tiring to do alone - a hedge chipped would make a tidy winter mulch.

I'd love it but it just wouldn't fit, sideways, backways, it won't compute!! ;D Even so I hope the very young plants in our garden will grow up to form a hedge like that, it's magnificent! And makes a garden VERY private, not that you have that problem where it is. It'd do it for us though.
