Ok I'm going to stick my neck out here - I'm NOT champing at the bit to see the coverage this year. I probably will take a look - I'm not that mad - but it really bugs me how much money is used to create the gardens, when it could be used so much better elsewhere. I know it's private money but that's beside the point - the gardens aren't real, practical gardens, and they are pretty much ripped apart and sold off afterwards. AND I'm sick of seeing all the wanna-be celebrities - I don't care about them - I want to see the plants and gardens if I'm going to watch. Rant over ;D

I think the Beeb have lost the plot a bit! I wonder who's had flowers named after them this year then? ;D

I quite agree Plocket. I watched the programme last night but, to be honest, it's the same old thing year after year....all that money, energy and plant stuff just for a week seems a bit of a crime really now. It's all a bit much for me. I'm looking forward to GWLive because I love plants (and I can't wait to meet everyone) but Chelsea always seems to be about everything BUT!

Why? I think lots of people who are gardeners would agree with you actually. We're not just grumpy old women! Chelsea is all about fashion, status, style, money and being seen with the "right" people. It IS in Chelsea for heaven's sake! It's a media event now which just happens to be based on gardening - that's why the Beeb devotes so much coverage to it. It's a bit like Ladies Day at Ascot I always think... lots of posh people dressed up, scoffing posh food and pretending they know about horses!

Hi Plocket maybe it should be me sticking my neck out. I enjoy watching Chelsea and any other flower show I get to watch. Yes The presenters and the celebs do get in the way of the gardens but most of the time I block them out. If i'm not in my garden it is my other way of switching off and going into my own world. - I look at the gardens and my head buzzes with idea's of how I could adapt/change it to fit into my garden. Of course I don't do any of them but I enjoy dreaming and on paper drawing out design idea's. Thank god for Chelsea, after my rant on another thread I will chill.!

Oh don't get me wrong Alicat I think the gardens and flowers at Chelsea look exquisite, but for me perhaps a tad too perfect, and therefore unrealistic, but the ARE show gardens after all It IS a way of switching off (much better than the Soaps ;D ) but I've started to question the ethics etc. Perhaps I AM a GOW but I don't care - I'll be dying my hair purple at this rate!!! Now where's your rant?

I have not seen any of it yet. Not through choice though, just circumstance. Chelsea has it's place, but I alway worry, maybe I shouldn't, about the wildlife that sees lovely flowers and great places to kip down then a few weeks later it is all gone! It does give you ideas for planting arrangements though, but some designers do go over the top with things. Some years there is more emphasis on structures than than the plants, which surely is what Chelsea is about. Oh well lets see if I can see some of todays on digital. OH is soon off to her second interview, so I will have some time to myself, after helping her sort out her presentation. My help was mainly computer help, her laptop from work is crap!!

I think I am the only person in the world who finds him irritating...I couldn't watch his "How to Garden" series cos I found him really patronising. He spoke as if he was talking to a class of 3 year olds! I know what you mean about him trying to go upmarket - sorry, but I just find him really smug (but he is a brilliant gardener...I'm not disputing that at all).

I actually quite liked that series, 4P, even if I did know most of what he was saying. I think it was aimed at the beginners market than some of us more experienced! Keith

On the first take of Carol Klein she was wearing the most lurid scarlet jacket which totally threw my picture on the box. Why do they let her do it.?
No doubt cacti/succulents will get their usual 7 seconds of coverage.
Personally I'm not mad on Chelsea. Much prefer Hampton Court.

I've seen a fair bit of it. Have cacti/succulents had any mention yet? They did carnivorous last night.

I've not seen much and I haven't seen cacti or succulents. I liked the carnivorous plants bit last night, but the green buildings in France stole the show for me - they were amazing!

I thought the team asked some reasonable questions about the sustainability etc. too. I'd love a house looking like that - talk about wow factor!!! ;D

My favourite garden was the winery! all those vivid colours and it was so natural looking. I missed the House in France.
