I'm not sure if there's a thread already about beetroot, if so please feel free to move this thread mods. I belong to a couple of message boards and it gets difficult to remember where I've posted what. : I soaked my beetroot seed bolthardy overnight and on 28/3/9 have planted them out. I made a new veg bed last autumn and dug lots of home made compost and bought stuff into it as I've very heavy clay soil. There was just enough room beside the various onions shallots and carrots to sow about a dozen or so beetroot. I'll be sowing more later in April but they'll be in containers. Has anyone else sown their beets yet?

I only wished I could LadyG but I havent the room for a veg patch! I would ave to redesign my garden to have one, Ive moved a pieris and done away with lavender to make room for my leeks. We love beetroot but I must admit the last we grew in our last house was a bit woody ! did something wrong evidently. Ill watch others with interest though.

Maggy, I said I did'nt have room for veg obnce upon a time. I don't at the moment have room for leeks but hey ho you never know, maybe one day. I've got my name down for an allotment but don't hold out much hope for it. By the time they give me one my arthritis will most likely make me unable to work it.

Oh so do I FB. At least then we'd know if the seeds are going to germinate and resow if they're not.

Ive never grown beetroot it sounds like they are quite hardy FB germinating whilst we still have frosts and so quick as well. I might give them a go next year, dont have enough room in my garden this year, with the veg seeds Ive already planted.

A bit like me then ;D when I walk past the allotments I always think I wish I had had one when I was younger! I know I couldnt manage one now my garden is enough for me ;D Im only doing leeks and parsnips as I have been bullied into doing something usefull on here!!

Well parsnip are no bother at all Maggie, once they're germinated you just leave them to it. I'm religiously watering my beetroot seeds every day here as the wind/breeze is drying out the top of the soil and we've not had rain in over a week.

You just twist the tops off,do not cut,or they will bleed, leave the root on,and boil in water ,i use a thin knitting needle to test when they are cooked,if it passes through the beet without too much pressure, they are cooked Then cut offthe root and whats left of the top,rub off the skins, they come off easly when warm, slice, and cover with vinegar ;D
