Im very partial to leeks ;D we have been having them a lot lately! only trouble is I would have to grow them between plants as I dont have a veg patch or even room for one! is it do'able do you think? Maybe a trial would be a good thing as an experiment what do you think??

Maggy, that's a great idea, I've never grown them but do like them particularly steamed then tossed in butter I would be willing to give them a go - just have to find somewhere to put the veg beds yet!

Leeks are easy, and its a good thing to grow them between rows of cabbages, as the smell confuses the pests .

We love leeks in our house - especially in cheese sauce! I sowed mine at the beginning of February - they are really slow to appear - last year I had all but given up on them. They started life in the lobby and are now out in the mini greenhouse. They are growing very slowly and will go out in one of the raised beds when they are about as thick as a pencil. The are like little wisps of grass at the moment.

John made me a box 4x4 for my leeks to-day and preserved it so I had better get cracking and remove the peris and lavender so I can condition the soil I think it will be big enough for over a dozen anyway! Im just trying them out this year really Ill plant most of them in my youngest Sons garden as Jad has gone out and bought hers from the G.C. I cant see my daughter digging up her lawn to plant some and I think the School my D.I.L and Son are at are growing veggies so they can have some but I hope the will prick them out I dont much like the thought of doing that and then giving them away.

I did this a few weeks ago thinking that I could grow them on in here until they could go outside into a bed! but really they dont look as if they have grown any since then, I put the boxes outside and covered them with fleece when I went away, now they are back in the greenhouse , Im thinking now I should have put them in a seed bed as plotty does, I have just been watching his vidio and I now know they are not going to reach pencil thickness where they are! before I go on my hols; Any advice what do you do ? what are yours in? and how deep should it be?

Latest on my leeks I have now transplanted them in deeper pots! they had good roots on them but were starting to go along the bottom of the boxes!! THIS is definately their last home before the garden its been a learning curve anyway I now know what I will be doing with them next time.

Ive still got mine in the original pots I potted them into, havent seen them yet, took them around to mam and dad's while we were away I hope they have grown some more, I must admit mine havent thickened very much although they are getting longer, they look like very long pieces of grass now, I wonder when do they start to thicken, Ive never grown them before.

Hi Karenwl have you grown leeks before? Do you know when they might start to thicken? When are you going to plant yours outside? Any advice gratefully accepted, dont really know what to do with mine.

Hi Tulip Ive grown them for the last 2 years and they hve done very well. I will not be planting them out for a few months yet. Mine are still very thin, they will start to thicken. I keep mine in the plastic greenhouse, i just keep the compost moist and not saturated. I have not had chance to take a pic yet but i will
