These are my Parsnip seed (FC kindly sent) I start them off like this, keep the kitchen tissue damp and wait till there are signs of germination. Then I carefully transfer them into Toilet Rolls filled with compost. I will Post later when (and if) they start to germinate--Bigs

I will Post later when (and if) they start to germinate--Bigs I've never tried that before Biggs - Last year I just put them in the ground and they did really well, until the Potatoes over shadowed them. : There still in the ground too as we forgot to dig them up for Christmas. : Might dig them up this weekend. I've got seed left from last year so I'll give it a go. I know old parsnip seed can be a little fickle but it's worth a try.

That's what I was thinking Em's - I can always get more Maggy I agree with Em's - give um to your neighbours or family. failing that dot them around your garden in any spare space, they will still be green even when everything has died down - might not be very big though. ;D

And you can Freeze them--to add to Stews/Casseroles-if you have too many. I found that out of about 20 that germinated and transfered into Toilet Rolls about half survived! Ems--I am not sure if allotment holders do their Parsnips this way (I think they just sow directly into the ground)but doing Parsnips (for germination)this way I found best for Container grown ones but worth a try for your Allotment --both ways. You have to be patient because they take a while to germinate anything up to 2 weeks.

Every time I look at the seeds on the 'damp' kitchen paper, the paper is bone dry, I didn't think my kithen was that warm either Don't think they'll be good for anything, in the end.

Thats smashing--we might get a few 'tips' from you then? This is only the second year I have grown them, (in a Container) If only I had a bigger garden then I could grow them as they should be grown --in the garden!--Bigs

Do not use fresh compost and don't grow in stony ground. I don't do what else to suggest.

Those are two tips I am pleased you have suggested. I was going to use fresh compost but will use ordinary garden soil now and take out any stones.--Do we 'feed' them during the year?-Bigs
