Fantastic Ali. You've worked very hard and made marvelous progress. You are both really going to enjoy the coming summer ;D The happiest days of my life was when my wife and I had an allotment. Thanks Sleepy We can't wait for the summer and enjoy everything.

Ali,
No wonder we haven't seen you around - haven't you done a lot already? Amazing, particularly with the bad weather we have been having as well. You all deserve a sit down with your feet up at night, but although it must be hard work, what you will get from it will outweigh the bad bits!
Enjoy it!

Hi Ali, I didnt have any problems with wire worm, but perhaps that was because my plot had been an allotment for about 80 years? My main problem was "buried treasure" from local cats actually. Id love to see your planting plans, have you drawn any up? Its very pleasurable to draw out on paper what you expect to grow, and where, and write out plant lists on cold wet evenings, I thought so, anyway.

Cats buried treasure is always a problem - Yuk! unless you can cover the ground of course. I've got loads of planting plans, but mainly in my head at the moment. I really want to get rid of the weeds first. I have written out all the veg I would like to grow though and have done lots of reading and research on the net. I've seen so many peoples Lottie blogs i've lost count. But i'm really enjoying it. Just wish the housework didn't get in the way. : ;D 'R' and I had a good chat tonight about what we would like to grow and he's been chatting to another allotment holder from work. They were talking about different ways to grow spuds. So it looks like we have our first trial to do this year. ;D - It's really exciting.

Alicat, you know the clay from your site, how about a clay oven for bread, pizzas, etc? I have step by step instructions...............you are lucky enough to have your own clay, and a hubby who is handy! (I've always wanted one - odd I am, but use the chiminea instead, perhaps I could talk my hubby into thinking what a great idea it would be )

Spuds ehh, I saw a GW repeat and a plotholder grew some earlies, and when she dug them up she put a late main crop into the same trenches! cant remember the variety, but I thought it was a very good idea.

Sounds interesting it would save a lot of digging if you think about it. not great though if you have had blight as the spores would still be in the soil as I understand it, please correct me if i'm wrong. This trial is not about the spuds you grow but what medium you grow them in. Normal - Dig a hole and bury them. Trench - make a trench fill with kitchen waste etc. and cover. Trench and soil conditioner - As above but adding soil conditioner (very well rotted manure) while earthing up. Thats the basic idea anyway.

Interesting trial But you shouldn't grow potatoes in trenches with kitchen waste (saps the nitrogen - poor growth) or well rotted manure (I think you will get scab) I would love to hear the results of the trials Ali

Saturday and Sunday 10/11 January 2009 No point going down the lottie today as it was barely above freezing – Those dam weather men lied. Instead I made a start of clearing out the G/H bagging up all the old compost from the pots to take down to the lottie for the new compost bin. Sunday. Well it is warmer, but we have had rain in the night so the ground was very soggy in the garden. Instead we made a cake for Megan's 11th Birthday, which is tomorrow. Then we had a phone call from Rob's brother to say he's got a shed for us. - Yippeeee. And could deliver it to the lottie today – brilliant. Got to the lottie about 1pm. The footpath leading to the plot was as slippery as anything – must remember to ask for some bark chippings or gravel for the main path. The plot itself was like a quogmire, So no point trying to do any digging. Anyway the shed was unloaded and lent against the fence - we need to ask permmission before we can erect it.The only other thing I did was to put some plastic over some of the weeds to hopefully weaken them. Just a few pic's. And Froggy – but he came home with us because he would have been scared and lonely on his own.

Grrrrrrrrr - Men. But we are talking again now so it's alright.
