Never mind 4Ps-You are forgiven- I dont think most gardeners missed very much last Friday night-- Once again Alys--Her idea of planting up a Winter container was terrible--she just plonked the plants on the soil--not in the soil--even Novice gardeners know plants dont grow without the roots being in the soil ;D The demonstraion Joe did with the Pumpkin was rather late--At 8.30pm on Halloween night--I ask you-- Wouldn't it be dark for anyone to try this --maybe it was for next year? ;D Cooking Pumpkin seed for a tasty snack--Gardening? Next week is the last programme for this series-- Carol and Toby are making this programme more interesting and seem to be putting their own stamp on it- at least they have a couple of months to consider this- I thought they might have included 'tips' on "Putting the garden to rest for the Winter" My moan over-- Bigs

Bigs is right. It wasn't that impressive. It hasn't really developed it's own character yet. Maybe next series...
Incidentally, I caught a rerun of AT on gardening for beginners. He really is very good imo. Shame he's not doing GW still.

I miss AT too, I love that man you know, I'd love to meet him too. I do watch AT's afternoon program when I do the ironing.... I'd rather see him in a garden than in a TV studio. But The witch, you love a lot of men...

I'm so sorry everyone, but I have deleted the whole GW thread accidentally...I am useless at pooters, as you all know....we'll have to start another one..... 4P! I am just going to agree with Bigs here, as it's my sentiments exactly. Last weeks programme was too bitty. Like I said before, if I was waiting for GW to tell me what to do with my exotics, they would all be dead or dying now! Think they are supposed to be doing that tonight, better late than never I suppose! I like Toby, think Carol is missed from Berryfields, not sure about Alys, Joe, no don't go there! Alright I will! Suffice to say, hate his allotment and his invisible friend! He is a designer, let him design, BBC! That was one of the problems with the allotment, he wanted to design it, than work it. How much work does/did he actually do on it. His family do some (OK with that) boy scouts help, university students help, maybe even the Hobgoblin does some work for him, you never know! Actually, are there too many presenters on the show, it's just a thought? Most though, is the hour long programme crammed into 30 minutes, with no seasonal tips to speak of! I still watch it, as it's a gardening programme, but not sure I have learnt much recently. I liked Toby trimming the grass with a spade and saving some grass 'prunings/offshoots' for growing on later and him moving the hedge, but that's about it really. His connection with Geoff Hamilton, has to be applauded in every way.

I thought tonights programme was better, not so bitty! Carol's piece on the seed stratification was good and so was the section on hardwood cuttings. How to protect plants over winter was informative for new gardeners. I really like Toby and just hope that next season he settles in a bit more. It all seems a little bit staged to me at the moment. Looking forward to the 'Specials'. ;D

Yes FC-- I thought the same as you, except I still think Alys has quite alot to learn with 'Presentaton' and wish she would either talk more plainly or look at the camera instead of turning away while she is speaking. Looking forward to the Specials.

I know it was a bit late, but I enjoyed Joe's part in the programme, especially putting grit over the ginger, before the compost. I liked Alys, with the perennials and Carol at her best, with her seeds. I agree with FC, Toby needs a clean sheet to fully feel at home, but he's going the right way. His cold frame was Geoff Hamilton all over again, using recycled materials and thought the white paint was a nice touch. Yep, I enjoyed it.

I enjoyed last night - I think Toby's 'talking to camera' is improving at a rate of knots but I couldn't help giggling at the end...it just seemed like Blue Peter for Grown Ups....all that jolly gaggle waving Bye Bye ......give them an hour and let each of them have enough time to cover a subject properly - and cut out the 'overhead camera watches Carol/Alys/Toby striding off to the next link' stuff......the specials coming up sound quite decent though...

I have just watched it on Catchup and I found it very usefull the Fig removing the small fruits and leaving the tiny little thing that thought was a shoot! and the Hedychia sp ginger plant Ive brought mine in I had to repot it this year as I lost it in the greenhouse last winter and the new growth didnt appear till late summer needless to say it didnt flower so next year Ill put it in the ground and mulch it as was shown. I also didnt know you could take seeds of acers Ill have to have a go and maybe be able to give te kids one (some hope)!!

I'm never sure about these 'specials'. I think carol is great, but why couldn't it be 'special', like not seen before. I suppose Joes will be the same, bits of his allotment, seen on tv throughout the year, with the odd new bit. Come on BBC, we need something to grab us at this time of the year. Looking forward to the Christmas 'Special' though!

Last night's 'special' wasn't all that special was it? It was interesting if you like growing vegetables, which I do , but I think it's a cheat to simply cobble together a lot of old clips and use Toby as a link man....cheap programming for the BBC, more like. And just a slight quibble - I wish they wouldn't do this idealised, lifestyle version of allotmenting. I know it is a chummy, and generally helpful environment but these 'let's have a party' affairs are very far and few between - most allotments I've had people have been far too busy to do more than wave and have a quick chat! Still in the total dearth of gardening programmes on terrestrial TV these days GW is still the bright spot in the week as far as I'm concerned....I doubt if I shall bother to watch any more of the CB wildlife one.

Tonight's GW looks quite interesting, if you're nosy about people's gardens (and I am). This is the blurb from the BBC home page:
'A garden can tell you a lot about a person and all of us garden in very different ways. Toby Buckland looks back at the year through some of the gardens the show has visited. Whilst head gardener Alys Fowler lets viewers into her own small town cottage garden, James Alexander Sinclair shows how to create a perfect view through unusual planting. Plus, there's a rare visit to Toby's own south Devon garden - built from a hoard of recycled materials'.
James Sinclair's gardens are always very interesting so that'll be good to see and a look at Toby Bucklnad's garden - that's quite brave of him!

I haven't seen tonights programme, and by the sounds of it I haven't missed much - Tweaked special's reruns from what I can see so far. I do like Toby though as main presenter for GW. I find him a bit more down to earth. ( AT was my favourite too) Like everyone else though, I think the programme is bitty and anything of interest, that you want to know more about is cut short. - I'm sure not everyone has access to a computer to log into the BBC website for more informed information. - Personally I would like to see the programme extended or less topics in greater depth. I do still watch it though just incase there is something new that hasn't been covered on the MB's. ;D
