I would love to go but I'm not sure whether the purse and the OH are amenable yet.......never tease with cactus - I've heard of a prick teaser but that's ridiculous....(sorry! Couldn't resist!)

You don't need a purse for me - all free gratis and for nothing.

I sense converts. If its flowers you want go for Rebutias, Lobivias, Pseudolobivias, Echinopsis, Mammillarias and Echinocereus (all cacti). I have always liked Cacti, grew some from seed as a kid, just don't want too many of them!! I always look at them at G/C and spent quite a few minutes looking at the Craig House stall at GWL. Trouble is, I like the BIG ones, you know the ones that resemble the ones from those western films!!? Keith

Keith, I think that you mean Carnegiea gigantea which is one of the slowest growing cacti that you can get.

Same as other cacti. Off the top of my head I think it's 20 years for 2 feet height but I will check it out.

Nope. Far too fast. 2' in 30 years and that is with free root room. It would be slower in a pot.

I forgot, I forgot, I forgot! I meant to tell you all. What a thicko am I??
Yesterday a plant arrived from the States that I had forgotten about - a cutting of Agave gypsophila. This is a beautiful Agave and very hard to get. Very exciting and in the greenhouse already!

Pics or links Mick? Gypsophila, is it related to our Gypsophila in any way? Or does the name describe some aspect of it?

I like that! Its very attractive, even the spines look nice, it doesnt really take a century to grow one does it? I havent got that long

Noooo! Agaves are known as century plants because they take a long time to flower and once they flower the plant dies. However, you can get offsets that continue to grow or new plants grow on the old flower spikes. You see alot of that in Spain on Agave americana and if the wind really gets up it can be dangerous with little spiky plants whizzing past your head.
I have one little Agave that has flowered twice in 35 years.

It didnt die then. I hate to think a plant will show me its best, then turn up its toes, so sad.

A bit like Sempervivums. The head that flowers dies off. Flowers are yellow on very long stalks - can be 20' plus on big plants.
