The new heaters have arrived and yesterday was my first chance to instal them and check right through to see what had hapened.
I lost a small Discocactus which didn't particularly surprise me. They are lovely cacti but really tricky and ideally need a min of 15c in winter. There is an excellent website about them which I'll look up for you. A fair few of the stapeliads had patches of rot which, again, is not unusual in winter but the lower temperatures have exacerbated it. I cut it out but I doubt if that will be the end of it. Slightly surprised to find the winter growing suculent pelargoniums had bot whitefly and a small patch of greenfly - and I had nothing to spray them with. I'll get something tomorrow.
The big Aloe ferox which is outside and fleeced is getting to much rain. I am going to take the fleece off I think and bubble wrap the whole lot.
I will have another careful check through at the weekend.

What should I be feedin it on ? it looks a bit faded?

Those of you with Aloes can give them a little water. That should see them through to March when watering can begin again.

Hi Mr. C. Our Christmas Cactus is starting to form another set of flower buds. Guess he's happy. Question of an ID please. Who is this? It forms dozens of tiny yellow flowers throughout the year and likes lots of water. I have two of them and they live on my north facing kitchen window sill for the last 10 years or more. Thanks for your time and help. .

Sorry 4P. I missed this this morning. It doesn't sound promising. Has the conservatory dropped below freezing? They should be fine at 40f. How do they feel? Are they firm or loose at the roots? They do all lose their colour when they are resting. Can you post a picture?

The conservatory shouldn't have dropped below freezing - I have one of those plug in heaters with an inbuilt timer. They aren't squishy actually. The Mammillarias look fine, as do the little babies you sent me last year. My beautiful red Euphorbia looks terrible though. If it's not squishy yet I think it will be soon....can I turn up the thermostat and pray?

No, it feels quite firm still (and strangely erotic in my weakened state ;D). Shall I fleece them lightly? (I mean cover them with fleece, not grope them!)

I never knew succulents could turn you on......... No, I think they are OK. Fleece them overnight by all means if we get some really cold weather but it is important to get as much light as possible on them during daytime.

Don't worry, it was only a faint glimmering...I can't really remember that sort of thing these days....dear me. At my age? With my bad back? I probably got hold of the wrong end of the stick (as it were) anyway. ;D
