Our hens have had their wings clipped Emsey - you cut the first four or five wing feathers on one of the wings a few inches and they can't get airborne then. It doesn't hurt them and protects them from straying where they shouldn't. Before we did them something(or someone) spooked them when they were out in the garden so much that one of the Speckled Sussexes managed to fly over the 6ft wall into next doors' immaculate garden. My eldest daughter and I managed to get her back without anyone apparently knowing, we were so lucky! After that I clipped their wings. Later on that day I found a rotten apple on the ground in the area where the chickens must have been when they took fright.I'm sure it was off our tree but there is no way it could have got that far away from the tree by itself. I suspect an overhanging bough into next doors' garden was the cause- the rotten apple had fallen into his garden and, true to form, he'd thrown it back. I may be mistaken, and If I'm not I have to assume that he didn't realize he was going to hit the chickens..............! But would your battery girls need their wings clipping? It wouldn't hurt them anyway, to be on the safe side. Thinking about it, debi was talking about clipping a wing, she knows how to do it, I just wasn't sure what they were capeable of even with the wing clipped. Being ex-bats they will be to weak to fly or walk or jump onto a roost at first but they soon perk up. My sister found one sat in the tree in her front garden ;D and its been with her ever since!! I think her son has clipped its wings though!! one morning she was running down the street trying to catch it she was afraid it would wake the neighbours up Oh I wonder if it was a cockerel? I haven't been to her house for a long time she doesn't live near me!

Some of the latest pic's of the 'Battery re-charger' Almost finished, if its dry tomorrow I'll paint it and Sean has a few last minute jobs to do on the run and its FINISHED ;D Note the slide out floor made from perspex with plywood on the top. ;)dont note the huge pile of debris behind the HH the shed we pulled down and its rotten contents, cant wait to get a skip now. Louis is on there to give you some idea of scale, he is 21 you know Here is a picture of the inside, do you think the perches are too close to the walls? They are 20cm from the wall

It looks fantastic. Louis is gorgeous! And I'm afraid I do think 20cms is slightly too close.....better to put it across the middle, and if you can put it on a wooden bracket so you can remove it for cleaning occasionally..only my opinion though. I wish I lived close to you, Emsey - all that old shed rubbish looks like a pile of potential kindling to me! ;D

Sean has screwed the perches from the outside, so they will come off quite easily to clean. I offered the wood to my uncle for kindling but he turned his nose up! There is so much rubbish everywhere ATM, I know it'll really make a difference to the look of the garden when its all gone ;D I'll get OH to move the perches. I think OH wanted to leave the hens plenty of floor space for when the do their yoga or line dancing, or if they have the guinea pigs round for a party

Yes, but I found the fact that they all had male voices very off putting! Chickens knitting yes, chickens talking yes, chickens talking like blokes ludicrous! ;D

I was eyeing the debris too, training from somewhere in the mists of time! ;D It looks GREAT Emsey, but I thought that maybe 20cm was a bit close too - it depends on the size of the birds. If they don't fit one way they'll try the other, it could be fine but then again it might be a bit too tight. Sean's done a fantastic job there.

Thanks ladies. We moved the perches in a bit more, they are about 50co from the wall now. Sean had a lot of trouble getting into the HH and back out again. I have put a couple of coats of wood preserve on, some bits (the treated bits from the original playhouse) have stayed brown, some bits have gone a bilious green : I'm hoping it will tone down with more coats, or time! Its a good job hens like a bit of color. Will post a finished pic the weekend when I've applied more coats.

Are any of your friends getting some chickens too, Emsey? No, most think I am mad! Some are waiting to see how I get on before considering it. I'm trying to convert everyone I meet tho. The Moms at the gate tend to avoid me now

;D Forgot to say - what a beautiful boy Louis is. Don't be fooled! He's a great contraceptive! ;D He can be the sweetest funniest thing though. I was watching he park 20 toy cars against the sofa this morning, he kissed each one before parking it up ;D
