OH arrived home from work early today with what will become my henhouse. ATM it looks like 4 upvc unglazed windows and 4 upvc 'legs'! The plan is to bolt them together and clad them with wooden panels, salvaged from an old play house that collapsed. We are also going to have a laminated floor in there too. OH is putting a nesting box on the side and we'll paint the whole thing white (if I can find the right sort of paint. It prolly wont look pretty, but it will cost virtually nothing and its all recycled (even the upvc)

Sounds good Emsey! My only thought is that you might need to build in some way to provide summer ventilation as it sounds like it will be very well insulated. Toasty warm in winter though ;D

Will post photos but I may have to email them to someone as I cant get photo bucket or image shack to work I don't try to motivate OH, its pointless, he must really want hens too, the way he's getting stuck into the project!

As you can see Sean has worked really hard today and made loads of progress. its just a case of a roof, which will be felt. a floor, which hopefully will slide out. and we will be putting a hinge roofed nesting box on a nesting box attached to the side (thats what the hole is for) I'm going to paint the wood green like out fencing and leave the profile white. Please excuse the mess of the garden!

Emsey that's brilliant! How long did it take Sean to put it together? Hardly any time at all, wasn't it? A really brilliant job - and the garden doesn't look messy at all, you wait 'til the chickens get hold of that lovely green lawn............ : Then it'll be a quagmire like mine - mine are banned from the lawn until it grows back. Are they going to have the full run of the garden?

The garden is very messy, specially at the top, but theres no way I'm showing you any panoramic views! We have a large run for the hens, but as I get more confident I'll let them in the garden while I'm around, I'm worried they may go over the fence, next doors dog would eat them! Do any of your hens scale fences? It really didn't take sean long to get where he is with the house. I don't think he'd make another, the boss was very good and gave him the profile, but he does get money for scrapping it, so I doubt he'd be keen to let us have it for anyone else, or to sell there's around £60 worth in the HH. The timbre is really good quality that would have cost alot if we didn't have it lying around, so they wouldn't be too cheap to make to sell. Mind you one of those omlets went for £600 on ebay yesterday!!!!!

Our hens have had their wings clipped Emsey - you cut the first four or five wing feathers on one of the wings a few inches and they can't get airborne then. It doesn't hurt them and protects them from straying where they shouldn't. Before we did them something(or someone) spooked them when they were out in the garden so much that one of the Speckled Sussexes managed to fly over the 6ft wall into next doors' immaculate garden. My eldest daughter and I managed to get her back without anyone apparently knowing, we were so lucky! After that I clipped their wings. Later on that day I found a rotten apple on the ground in the area where the chickens must have been when they took fright.I'm sure it was off our tree but there is no way it could have got that far away from the tree by itself. I suspect an overhanging bough into next doors' garden was the cause- the rotten apple had fallen into his garden and, true to form, he'd thrown it back. I may be mistaken, and If I'm not I have to assume that he didn't realize he was going to hit the chickens..............!
But would your battery girls need their wings clipping? It wouldn't hurt them anyway, to be on the safe side.

Thinking about it, debi was talking about clipping a wing, she knows how to do it, I just wasn't sure what they were capeable of even with the wing clipped. Being ex-bats they will be to weak to fly or walk or jump onto a roost at first but they soon perk up.

Thats the poshest Hen House Ive ever seen Em; ;D does it have central heating as well? Afraid not, but I've got chicken jumpers hand knitted, at the ready, and I'm not joking! Sean made the most of the good weather today, and finished the slide out floor and the nest box, tomorrow he's starting on the roof and tinkering with the run as it needs a few modifications. Here is the latest pic.

Emsey PLEEEASE can you post a picture of the chicken woollies.....? This is really entertaining me... I am building an entire fantasy about football shirts, the battery hen's new life as Premier footballing stars with their sumptuous new home, luxury lifestyle and prima donna demands...are you their agent? Are they Villa or Birmingham City colours? Where are you getting their boots? OO, is Sean building them a dust/jacuzzi bath? And don't forget they'll need a full time physio to get those muscles into shape.... Arsenal Ladies team better watch out!

I've got to wait for Mom to post her jumper yet, but I'll take a pic of the jumpers later and what Sean did with the run yesterday, later. The truth is, I don't know how to work the new camera.........yet That reminds me, I want to give the Henhouse a name ;D I saw one called cluckingham palace witch tickled me! But I want something original, but I cant think of anything, well I had one idea, The Roost INN. Have any of you got any ideas? I can pass of as my own ARRRRRGGGGG 4P!! WE DON'T RESCUSE BIRMINGHAM CITY HENS IN THIS HOUSE!

I can't stand the Wags! Moronic money grabbing hangers on, more like....I wouldn't insult your new hens by a comparison to them! No, they are definitely a dynamic new ladies team with ambition and a overwhelming desire to overcome their bad start in life and prove they have it in them to succeed......Battery Broilers Utd? ;D Sorry, I'm trying not to spoil your Hen thread with my babble... : Sorry sorry, I shall never mention that team again then....
