As you may recall, my allotment is history and I am turning a couple of lawns at the end ogf the garden over to veg.
As you might guess this is bloomin'hard work and the weather has been pretty much against me. I've managed to dig over two thirds of one lawn (the sunnier half) and the Broad beans are in. Next weekend the leek seeds and onion sets go in.
I'm then going to strat on the other half which isn't quite as sunny so that I can get the spuds in and sow some spinach.

Sounds like you have it all under control Mick, your lettuce can go in the slightly shadier part too, it might help it not to run to seed so fast if it gets hot.

I'm not as advanced as I'd like but I can't do much about the weather and it's seriously knackering digging up lawns. What else would do well in the less sunny bit?

Parsley, radishes mint, sage, Dill even spuds, as long as its not dry shade or complete shade, some light needs to filter through. Theres probably lots more, Parsnips would probably be ok too, less likely to dry out in partial shade.

Its not too bad. It gets the sun in summer up to about 2pm but virtually nothing in winter.

Do any of the beds have hedges next to the Mick? If so there will be competition between the hedges and your crops for nutrients. Are you any nearer to being able to post photo's Mick? I'd love to see your garden. One side does have some shrubs the other side of the fence but it is manageable. Getting closer all the time The witch. Going to look at PC's Thursday evening. Actually, my garden's pretty dull, I think.

I wouldn't consider Dell machines They come made to measure Sleepy - OH got a good deal last year with Dell when he bought his lap top, and the PC we had before our present one was from Dell. The MOD use them too. Well I consider them to be total crap - in build and in support. I purchased 10 Dell laptops, and they all failed in 2 3 years of their working life - the bodies all developed a crack in the casing in the same place, followed by the machines switching themselves off at the slightest touch of the casing. It seems the cause was a motherboard failure which Dell wanted to charged the price of a new laptop to rectify. I would never buy Dell again.

What happened to the allotment Mick? The veg beds sound great - they're nowhere near the nuisance neighbours are they?

I gave it up Debbie when I changed jobs last September as I used to look after it in the evening after work. It is next door to the neighbours but they're not really a nuisance - just useless.

My last one was Dell and am reasonably happy with it, but Jennifer has a Dell Laptop, that in less than a year (she had it nearly new) it had to have a new keyboard. Dell's customer support isn't brilliant and I've needed to contact them twice, once good service and the other time, total crap. Sounds like you are going great guns, Mick, what size is the plot? What is it about leeks, I don't know about?? Keith

We got our daughter a Toshiba laptop from John Lewis. It was £379. OH didn't think that was a bad price as it has lots on it. Janet.

As she was the newest member, she had the crappy one, while everyone had decent ones, until they upgraded to, guess what, Dells that the rest had before!! Keith

If The witch's husbands IT department, and Jennifer's ex-company's IT department rate Dells, then they must be the bees knees. I'll tell you what, I promise I won't impart my advice about computers any more. I will refer all questions to you to pass on to Jennifer's ex-companies IT department.

Although I've only been able to clear about half the area so far (digging up old lawns is b.... hard work), I'm very pleased with the results so far. Broad beans and onions are doing well, potatoes are in, carrots, beetroots and 2 types of spring onions sown at the weekend.
And watering is so easy compared with the allotment.
Eeven if I don't get it cleared in time there is a lot of stuff I can still do in pots - tomatoes, courgettes, lettuces in old plastic window boxes that I still have.
