We now have a sooper dooper shredder in the office which minces all paper to litle tiny bits. Compostable? If so, how long.

Hi Mick
I should imagine that your paper will compost very well, especially if you mix it with other stuff. My shredder only cuts into strips which are about 4mm wide. I am trying stuff like bank statements in with veg waste from my juicer which would otherwise probably be a bit slimy! I avoid putting any shiny paper in though as I suspect that it would take a lot longer to decompose. Try it and let us know how you get on.

As Piggin says, shredded paper composts well but avoid glossy pages. We shred confidential stuff like addresses and bank information at home and I share it between the composter and the wormery. It breaks down very quickly and helps absorb a lot of the moisture you can get in composters.

One of my favourite subjects! First things first make sure you get a good mix in the heap, dont add too much paper in one go, and try to layer it with green material, add some "activator" (Bob Flowerdew uses recycled cider ) and try to mix it at least once a month, keep it covered so it doesnt get too wet, and try to keep it warm. Add some of that manure, Mick, and you have a winning combination! I have old hot water tank jackets on mine and the compost kept rotting well even in the coldest weather. I have three pallet heaps at the lottie and they all did well. I dont think much of the dalek composters though, better than nothing is the most positive thing I can say!

No, but the thought of you perching on the top of a composter held certain fascinations.
