The melons are on my Mum's kitchen window but they look pathetic - as do the Broccoli plants that she has too - don't quite know what she's doing to them and I can't take them away as she'd be hurt....sigh, poor old Mum.

You could, if you replaced them with something else, or tell her they are ready for the PT?

I have spoken with the tree surgeons, who call me sweetie btw How do they know!?? They are working in Four Oaks today which isnt that far from me, and will be delivering a load of sycamore chippings to me for my paths today. My brother is coming to help me and I have organised a "lift" for the lawnmower too, today the second plot will get a good tidy and hopefully the Garden tractor will make a difference over the next week or so (maybe even today if I have my way) Meanwhile OH has promised to make some headway with the GH at home if he gets a moment. Hope it all works out, I could do with something going right for once! Oh and I shall be planting out my sweet peas today too, I need the room on the staging for more sunflowers!

Jolly good. Chippings are brilliant. What was that old sci fi film where he kept making mountains out of mash etc? With the bit of music? OMG I can't remember anything tonight......

Got rained off today, it hasnt stopped since early on, I still ache everywhere though so its probably for the best, and the mulch will have been bedded in too. I wanted to get so much done this weekend though. Oh well, theres always tomorrow. Meanwhile, the greenhouse needs a tidy so I can get in there and potter after dinner.

Well, I've certainly had enough rain to soften up the undug part. All I need now is for it to stop so that I can actually get on it. Been raining all day here.

I haven't been to the allotment for about 10 days because of the weather but it is so lovely here today that I walked up there at lunchtime.
Despite (or because of) my nightly watering of the seed drills germination has been patchy:-
Pink Fir Apple potatoes are just showing Leeks, spring onions, broad beans, mixed leaves have all germinated well.
Beetroot and carrot not quite as good.
Spinach and radishes about half.
Parsnips have pretty well failed again. However, being positive I have some extra space for something else.
I wonder if all that watering was actually worth it. Should I have just left them until the rains came perhaps? My plot is very exposed, is on a hill and stony so it dries very quickly. Nevertheless once they come up they crop quite well.
I tend to sow in situ rather than grow elsewhere and plant out. Because of the dryness (last year being a prime example) transplants such as French beans and sweetcorn pretty much failed as well and didn't crop.
I hope to start on the undug area tomorrow although I have more work to do on my daughters garden.

I think it is worth watering Mick! And I can't get parsnips to grow either. That's why I do mine in loo roll inners - that way I don't waste space. I still only get about a 50% germination rate though....

The strange thing is that I had no problem with them on my old allotment a few years ago. Perhaps it's the quality of the seed?

I think it's one of those funny things - you never have trouble until you read that they're tricky, then you can't get them to go for love nor money!
