How warm is your garden? C. balearica etc. is not that good in the cold. Ours just about hangs on, but the flowers are never that specatacular and they hang down so you do not see the inside of them. For a really good flowering effect you need to grow it in a cool conservatory. Cannot help with the price. except that C. armandii is harder to propagate.

Well ours is on a South facing wall and it still does not do much. I would have to disagree with the article. I can think of a lot more plants to have before I would chose that one.

Hia The witch!
I've not yet read the Telegraph article but I've got Freckles in the garden and it's quite happy against a south facing wall. It's never covered in flowers but it's a good do-er for pretty winter flowers. If your proposed pergola is relatively sheltered it should do ok.

I'm hoping for a pergola here P - i33.photobucket.com/albums/d75/The witch-in-Norfolk/per1.jpg [/IMG] the left hand fence is south facing.
That's going to look lovely, The witch - hope you don't have too much of a battle with the local slugs and snails in your new house though, as our resident population adore Clematis.

Mmmm I take your point. Have you designed the pond then, or are you leaving that until nearer the project start?
