I'm trying a new canna this year...can't remember the name but it's red & yellow.....apparently. As you no doubt all know by now I really love big leafy plants that shouldn't really grow in a small midlands garden... ;D We have a musa basjoo in the ground (atm wrapped in fleece and straw) plus several in pots that are hibernating in the conservatory. I planted several calla lillies but only one has flowered so far (that's in the GH atm) 2 tree ferns...both quite small. (Bruce and Sheila) A beautiful Ginko Biloba tree in a pot (present from 4P ) Papyrus in a pot...might not survive the winter...it's in the GH.... Cycas Robusta...about 3-4 years old, in a pot. Alocasia (big elephants ears) hibernating..... A young Chamaerops humilis and a trachycarpus fortunei in the flower bed... I've recently bought a GUNNERA manicata..... ;D ;D ;D for a boggy bit of the front garden (in the GH atm) oh and I have a baby bird of paradise plant in the conservatory. Can you suggest any other interesting 'exotic' plants I can grow in the garden in the summer ? preferably from seed.

Cant wait to see a piccy of them all in glorious colour. ;D

We've got a Musa Basjoo in a pot but the pot's not in the right spot, as the poor plant is always getting shredded by the wind. How does your one fare in the ground, Cheery?

We've got a Musa Basjoo in a pot but the pot's not in the right spot, as the poor plant is always getting shredded by the wind. How does your one fare in the ground, Cheery? That's why, when I was after a banana plant last year, I went for Musa Sikkimensis (bought at GWL) as it is better against high winds and just as hardy. Even though it was still quite young last year, it still did well in the wind we had in early autumn. Great list Cheery. Do you have any books on the subject? I have been looking at the ones at Jungle, as I seem to be going that way as well! Check these out! Are they any good, do you have any of them? Keith P.s. On preview, it doesn't go to the page I want it to, but just click on Books A-M!

This is the first year we've had the musa in the ground Debbie...and I cut off most of the leaves, built a wide chicken wire cylinder around it, stuffed that with straw and then put a fleece bag over that...there's also a tray on top to stop the wet getting in...I'll let you know how it's got on when I take the wrappings off after the frosts ;D OOH Keef....you know how to tempt a girl : ....I've got an ensete ventricosum and an ensete maurelii (red banana) in the conservatory...there are photos of both in my garden pics in members' gardens.

I popped the new alocasia tuber into a pot of compost yesterday, and have it standing on a shelf in the pvc GH in the conservatory...this year I might pop the 'old one' that was soooo stunning last summer into the border itself...along with the palms it should give us a groovy jungly part of the garden ;D
I really need a rice paper plant.....

isn't it gorgeous!? it will go in a v large pot so that I can move it somewhere sheltered overwinter...it says in my book that if you put it in the ground you just mulch it over winter when it dies right back.
It's sposed to be easy to grow from seed...hhhmmmmm ;D

Cheery, when should I unwrap my banana? Should I have done it by now, though there is supposed to be more frosts next week. Is it like the gunnera, that is uncovered now, where you keep the fleece handy, just in case?

I wouldn't take the wraps off yet Keith. We had a long hailstorm this arvo...and we've got frosts predicted for weeks yet. I'm keeping an eye on the weather and reckon ours will be unwrapped towards the end of May...but it's up to you medear...it would be a shame to get it through the winter only to loose it at the last minute...

CheeryPeabrain, have you been to Akamba Nurseries? They were in Acocks Green Birmingham but now have a centre in Shirley, well edge of Dickens Heath.
It is signposted as The African Heritage Centre.
It is full of jungle-type plants - hubby and I lost each other and he had to wait by the gate to find me - you have to part some of the plants to go round! There were a few with sold notices on to Gardeners World last year - didn't find out whether they were for GWL or Berryfields!

It's very tempting isn't it Keith ;D I keep wanting to take a peek at my musa...but I'm hanging on for a bit longer. Do you get Ameteur Gardening magazine? they're usually full of advice about that sort of thing....I'm going to see if this weather holds first. Today I bought another colocasia called 'Black Magic' it's only little atm...but I have high hopes. www.willowaynurseries.com/Images/19ColocaBlackMagic.jpg

On here, it says unwrap by May, well we are nearly there now, aren't we? Going to check the forecast for the next few days and ponder unwrapping in soon, but have the fleece handy just in case. If I have lost it, will need to buy a new one soon, though I suppose I could wait until GWL again if need be.

Well let me know what you decide...I've never kept my plant in the ground before..I usually don't take it out of the GH until it starts growing. I spose I'll have to unwrap it soon or the stem might rot.
