All good suggestions, Sleepy, and all ones I have tried in the past, with very low survival rates, perhaps I ought to lose the hedge then, theres a fence behind it, and it doesnt actually need to be there any more Im decided....... its time to get the saw out. I still wouldnt mind more suggestions, when the hedge is gone the border will need filling.

Epimedium, Euphorpia, Helleborus Foetidus (I used this in this situation before). Skimmia might be OK, if you could add plenty of organic matter. You should do this anyway! Flowering Currant (ribes) will do well in this situation, as I was close to buying one of these when we lived in Oakham, but moved before I bought one!!!
How much room have you got, SL? What size of plant do you need?

Aruncus(Goatsbeard), Brunnera, Laurel, Polygonatum, and good old Aucuba. Are we talking about big or small plants?

Its about 15ft long and 3ft deep Keith, when the hedge is gone, its a wierd shape, like a backwards L only not quite as sharply angled.

The fence is 6ft high, and provides a lot of shelter, and loads of shade.

The more this one went on the more I said to myself, I've seen this one before!! B****y repeats! I know we got Sky for the sport, but some days you go down the list of all the other channels, you wonder why you have it in the first place!! OK the reruns of Only Fools and Dad's Army are worth it. Keith But this isn't sorting out your problem, though is it!!?
