Alright time for this again. What would be your first perennial, hardy or tender to go into a new garden? I would go for Delphiniums, but I think this is a harder one, as I love penstemons as well, let aone crocosmias, sedums...................see it's hard to pick just one!! Keith

I think Crocosmia, if the garden's bare and needs filling up fast. It spreads like wildfire.

Arrh, no, that's inpossible - surely it depends on the time of year.....I can't imagine early summer without the blue Delphiniums, the summer without Hollyhocks or the Autumn without Echinacea.....I couldn't possibly choose one out of those three.

If it was easy, I woldn't have put the question up!! ;D Just think, bare garden, alright maybe a framework of a tree and a few shrubs, what is the 'first' perennial that comes to you? Keith

Don't worry Madon - I was trying to think of something other than clematis for once, but seem to have failed miserably

Hello. Okay, off the top of my head. If it is shady I'd pick Heucheras. If it's sunny I'd go for Erysimums

Humph!!! I'll have to think very carefully ;D Just think, bare garden, need some perennials, what comes into your head first? Keith Good question, Keith. I think it would have to be a hardy geranium. 'Johnson's Blue', perhaps or maybe 'Kashmir Pink'. On the other hand, if I was planning a garden properly and starting at the back of the border instead of the front, then I'd go for foxgloves (are they perennial or biennial?). I'd love to grow Delphiniums but they get eaten by my slugs LSG

Been having a think and have decided on a geranium, one with nice foliage like maculatum espresso.

I don't know whether I'm entirely right on this matter but I think that the perennial clematis are all the ones that produce new growth from the ground each year - so basically all the Group 3 clematis.

It would have to be Penstemon .... flowers seemingly for ever, seems impervious to S&S, and is more or less evergreen. And incredibly easy to grow from cuttings ;D

You know...thinking about it I realise that I simply don't have enough gardening experience to choose! I am constantly trying new plants, chopping and changing in the garden...I've only been gardening seriously for a few years and there are sooooooo many plants out there that I haven't tried to grow yet!
So provisionally....Hardy perennial would be hyssop ;D my favourite so far....or monarda.....I think....

Hmmmmmmmmm.... Bare garden, need some perennials, what comes into my little brain cell frst? Violets! Spreads readily on their own by seed or they can be divided or stray volunteer plants can be transplanted where they are wanted. They give a beautiful flush of a variety of colours for blooms ranging from blues, white, black, purple, purple with white splotches, white with wee polka dots ... depending on the variety in spring and then intermittently a few flowers here and there throughout the summer and sometimes beyond.
