I'm sorry my camera's deceased so I hope I can describe this plant accurately. I bought it from my children's school fete and was told, and it was written on the pot, that it was a 'Drumameion' or something very similar : . Guess what this name doen't exist. So first of all I thought'Geranium' and looked up that but this is nothing like any Geranium I've ever seen. It has just flowered and it absolutely exquisite. The blooms are apricot orange with huge anthers( the middle bit with all the pollen?) about 4-5 inches across and the texture of the petals is of crepe paper. The leaves are serrated and heart-shaped and quite light green. When I bought it there were just leaves on the plant and it was a very small plant so I just added it to one of my hanging baskets - it's obviously a much bigger plant than one for a basket! There are loads of buds yet to open and it will completely dominate the basket - unfortunately in turn the aphids are trying to dominate the buds. I've taken into account a bit of mispronunciation and that it's not spelt quite right but I can't find anything anywhere near it in name in my RHS book, mind you I haven't sifted right through to the end yet. Any ideas? Thanks!! Debbie

Thanks both. So far in the trawling through the RHS book there's one Begonia that looks the most similar as far as leaves are concerned but nowhere near regarding the flowers - I was so surprised when they opened! Great idea look for a name beginning with Dr, Sweetleaf, but the flowers are so Hibiscus like, or even Hollyhock - they don't have lots of tissuey layers. Good idea to

Begonia was the first thing I thought too.......try googling it maybe? If it is spelt wrong it might give you an alternative choice?

It didn't with the Drumameion but I'll have a go at alternatives.....it cost me 50p at the fete and grew so easily so it can't be that exotic, can it..............?

If/when it dies down you can have a look at the roots and see if theres a corm, too that should help with the I.D. Anything like these btw? www.kesdahlias.co.uk/begonias.htm

Thanks Sweetleaf but it's definitely not those. The flowers have five large petals and that's it, no layers at all - very simple and like a flower a child would draw...... Yours is closer Sleepy but it's still not it as the flowers don't form trumpets like those ones - the stems are very thin and go right up to the back of the flower. But the flowers themselves look similar, and the leaf shape. I can't see the flowers evolving into the trumpets like those ones.

Really! Oh brilliant if it is! I take it it won't be hanging basket size for long then? I now know where to look in my RHS book - thanks Sleepy. I wonder if at last I'll see a photo of it staring back at me!

I wonder if at last I'll see a photo of it staring back at me! There are many abutilons This is Abutilon 'Victor Reiter' (flowering maple). The leaves are different, but you can see the flower is the same as yours. www.calfloranursery.com/images/pics/a_b/abutilon_victor_reiter.jpg

Yes it's so definitely an abutilon then, the flowers are spot on like the one in the photo. Mystery solved after over a year. Thanks again Sleepy.
