This is one of the alpine meadow gentians, taller and summer flowering, unlike say G. verna or G. septemfida which are more usually grown. Again the photo was taken in the dark to help get the real blueness of the flowers.

Lovely owdboggy I had thought about growing gentians a few years ago, but as I remember they are quite fussy Mmmm taking photo's in the dark, that's a good idea, as I have found the photo's I have taken of purple and blue flowers don't look true to life colour wise - thanks for the tip I will have to try some night and day photography and then compare

ooh gorgeous ...I've not had a lot of success with blue flowers this year....that gentian looks fab, is it difficult to grow?

No, it is a meadow gentian and all it asks in well drained soil in full sun with a little shade round its roots. Buying the plants is more of a problem as few places stock them I have managed to get seed to germinate, but not to get the baby plants to grow on, yet.

The first and last time I saw them for sale was at Balmoral Castle quite a few years ago.
