We have one or three Clematis in the garden. Now labels are long gone and my senior memory is failing, so to save me having to trawl through the Hull Clematis site, can I post them and see if anyone recognises them?

Hia Owdboggy! What fun - Id-ing clems!!! I don't know for sure on any of them of course, but I'll have a bash and see if the names ring any bells. Ok for starters I think the top one is possibly Etoille Violette and the last one Warsaw Nike. I'll get my books out later on today when I've got a bit more time and see what I can come up with

Definitely not Etoile violet, got that elsewhere, these flowers are a little paler and much bigger and not a group 3 pruner. No 3 i thought was Warsaw Nike.

No1 is paler than Etoile Violet, just dodged the rain to go look.

Ok I've got my books out! Nos 1 and 3 are vaguely similar in that they are reddy purple, so unless you can tell me how big the flowers are and when they flower it's going to be very difficult. Contenders are: Westerplatte, Niobe, Rouge Cardinal, Warsaw Nike, the Vagabond and Vivienne. Of course there are other possibilities but those are my first suggestions!
No.2 has me a bit confused because the petals are very isolated. Was the photo taken when the flowers were quite old? Hagley Hybrid and possibly Silver Moon come to mind.
No.4 is a sweetie and my first thought was Chinook or Savanah. Again could you tell me how high it grows because I think it might be of the integifolia group.
No. 5 is very pretty too and I think it might be Clair de Lune but I don't think the stamens are the right colour. At a push it could be Ivan Olsson.
No. 6 could be The President, Jackmanii, Gipsy Queen, Polish Spirit... it's a long list I'm afraid.
As already mentioned, if you can tell me what pruning groups they are in and how tall they grow that should help.

First two are big flowered hybrids, so Group2 pruning. Flower sizes are difficult because this is such a funny year, but at present about 3 inches across. No. opens like that, could be Hagley Hybrid, we have that somewhere, defo not Silver Moon, never bought it. Other 4 are all Group3 and are either (supposedly)viticellas or texensis types. Agree about No. 6, should have known that myself. No. 5 sorry, never bought either of those. Been through Toomey and Leeds this morning (well it is raining) and managed to put names to a dozen more so not doing too badly. Only about a dozen to go!

It sounds as though you have quite a collection Owdboggy - do you open your gardens to the public so we can come and see them?

Last count we have over 100, did have more, but some died in the drought last year. Most of them I can id, but these are proving hard. We have something which pinches labels almost immediately, no matter how well I hide them. You think these are hard, then try id'ing Hemerocallis! There are about 2 dozen of them with no names! Not open to the public, not even in the Yellow Book. Too much stress! No parking either.

Have you got the Timber Press Encyclopedia of Clematis? I'm going to work my way through that when I have a bit of time but it might be a while before I can because my little one has just broken up from school! How big is your garden to fit in all those lovely clematis? I'd love to have space for more but am struggling now

If that is the Twoomey and Leeds one then yes, that is the one I use. I will have to work my way through the Hull Uni site I think. The garden is about 3/4 of an acre.

Yes the Toomey & Leeds one. Nice - not too big and not too small. Good luck with your IDs - I'll help if I get a chance, and if you need it still of course

Try as I might I cannot see Plocket's last posting. However after much searching back I have found the original bill for no.s 1 and 2 (Bridgemere even!) 1 is C. Romantica and 2 is C. Margaret Hunt. Only a few to more to go now!. ;D

OB it sounds like you needed to reload the page, all the entries are there, straight away for me with no lag, it may have been a proboards glitch, but it appears to have resolved itself.
