Here we go again. Feeling rough and bored, so thought I would ask the question. You have moved into a new house and have a blank canvas, a bit like The witch actually. What is the first shrub you would put in if conditions, like soil, pH were OK? My choice is my variegated Weigela Florida. Nothing special I know. But the one in my garden is a cutting from a cutting from a cutting.... you get the drift, from my first shrub cutting I ever took, all those years ago! So what is yours! Keith

Poor old you! Are you getting any sympathy from the family after all your care and attention when they were sick? I hope so! Hope it goes quickly. Shrub? That's quite tricky as I do like a good shrubbery - but I would prolly choose the very wonderful Lavender angustifolia. Tried and tested, smells wonderful, cheap as chips, wild life love it and lasts for years. You can't ask for much else really......

Oh goodness me having to choose one shrub is so difficult! I like varigated myrtle and upright rosemary in particular. I'd have the myrtle if the garden is sheltered, but if it's not I'd have the rosemary. Oh but I like ceanothus too........

Hard isn't it? I thought of shrubs like Buddleia or Viburnum Opulus, due to their wildlife value, but stumped for my Weigela for the reasons I gave.

Cotoneaster Horizontalis, lovely berries after wildlife attracting flowers, well behaved and easy to maintain, perfect.

I think that it would have to be lavender for me too...English Blue, not the butterfly ones because I'm not keen on those ;D I've grown some sort of levendula in the garden ever since I started taking an interest in gardening...now have about 9 different varieties ;D
As a close second it'd be Lilac...but only if I had a huge garden.

Whittling it down to just the one shrub - not easy, but I think it would probably be a Buddleia. Or a Pea Tree, or an Elder, or......
