P, If ihad know you would end up with a minature and a double at that. I would have given you Robin Redbreast as another option. LPs choice is a good one, itis supposed to have a Tea fragrance!, could mean one of its ancestors was a Tea Rose. They were so named as the ragrance reminded people of tea, they were transported by Tea Clippers from China. So name from fragrance, which remined people of tea, fragrance from the tea during the long voyage or called Tea Rose because they came with the shipments of tea? Another one of lifes little musteries. That will go down well at a dinner party or the Snug when theres a lull in the conversation.
I used to get the Fryers catologue sent when only a lad in London

Hia Fozzie!
I wasn't actually looking for a double because as you know I like the really simple blooms, but today it was a toss between Regensberg and Queen Mother - I preferred the former. And I didn't see Robin Redbreast there. LPs choice was more for colour rather than much else but she's going to be looking after it and was the main planter!
Thank you for the history of the Tea rose - I didn't know that history but will try and log it for future reference.
I must admit that I don't know Fryers except that I've heard of the name. I'm starting to do a bit of research because I'm now after roses with names that are special to me. I might have to PM you the names to see if you can help but I have managed to find one at Peter Beales - the secondary name of course, not the most important name to me!
I might have to send off for the Fryers catalogue then and see what they have to offer - unfortunately I their site encounters problems when I click on "more information" about specific roses.
Thanks for your comments Fozzie,
Px

Must remember to take gardening gloves off before typing, helps to finf the corr=ect keys!
Just afollow up on LPs Rose, more for my interest really but I thought I'd share it with you. A lot of Sophys antecedents were early 1900 HTs, even Dusky Maiden is in there somewhere, with a strong Damask fragrance. Can only assume from their parentage. The last 3 traceable seed parent (or mum to you and me) are all DA bred. The last HT comes in as a Great Grandfather. The immediate parents are Prospero and an unknown father, I'll let you explain that one!!
You do not have to answer these rantings, just nod sagely with eyes raised to the heavens!!

I'm giggling away at the image of you typing in your gloves Fozzie!!! ;D I'm interested in your rantings though Fozzie and the parentage of Sophy's Rose is very interesting. Dusky Maiden was one of the ones I was originally looking at wasn't it? I can't wait to see what S'R smells like because Damask is supposed to be quite rich and sweet isn't it? So parents are Prospero and an unknown father - slightly suspicious because that immediately makes me think of two men!!! Did you see that I found your search thread very useful and have managed to track down one of the roses to a place called Warley Rose Gardens. I haven't contacted them or looked for a website yet but I have a phone number which is a start! The other one I'm looking for is somewhat vaguely "widely available" which is good in one sense but means I have to find out whether Wyevale, or my other local garden centres have it. More research is needed with the second one!!! Am I getting a bit keener on roses? ? ;D Px

I can only live in hope!
That garden centre is in Brentwood Essex but I guess you knew that. No website that I've manager to locate.
Hope you can speak Essex, wearing white shoes might help.
If your thinking of going there is a Clem specialist in Romford, just remember no hills to act as wind break, North Sea North wind this time of year. Nah stay where you are its warmer.
Did you know Kent, regularly, gets the most snow of all English counties.

Morning Fozzie!
I won't be going to Essex or Kent in the foreseeable future, but I'm a Kentish Maid so know the area reasonably well! There is a phone number for ordering so I might well try them some time.
I didn't know Kent gets the most snow - it would be interesting to see how much Staffordshire gets actually because we seem to miss out on it frequently, much to LPs disappointment.
Should I be protecting my new roses at the moment Fozzie, what with this heavy frost? They were bare root and we planted LP's (Sophy's Rose) on Sunday afternoon. I don't want the heavy frost to damage it. The other one is in a container but in a very sheltered spot so I'm not quite as worried about it.
I'll keep you posted about my researches but won't be doing anything about it until March probably.
Take care, Px

It would normally be ok, but a fleece over coat would do no harm either. Am off to "Darlo" Darlingtom and to quote from Captain Oates "I may be some time"

Well don't end up like poor Captain Oates!!! Thanks for the advice re Sophy's Rose - it might be too late after two heavy frosts but I'll put some fleece over it tonight as it's due to be even colder! Have fun in Darlington Px
