Yesterday OH and I went to the GC to pick up some seeds when OMG I spotted this huge Photinia Red Robin with a notice on it that it was on special offer. It was about 8ft high and 3-4ft across, really healthy. The person who would have confirmed the price was out at that moment but the guy who was there thought it would be just under £50 but would need to check it out. This was so lovely I think I would raid my savings to have it and it would do a lot towards screening us off from our neighbour since he pulled down all his Montana. I think that is a fabulous price, what do you think? If it's just over £50 delivery is free, under £50 and the delivery's £2.50, not worth worrying about really.

That is surely a very large shrub and, although it would be far too much for me, having seen the prices of shrubs several yards smaller than that I think that probably is quite a good price. Is your soil fairly acid Debbie, as Photinia is happier in those conditions? Sorry, I can't remember... If you have the dosh and you really really want it - why not go for it! (Just be careful about transplanting it in this frozen tundra weather we are having though.... )

I've just read that they'll be quite happy in chalky conditions and a lot more besides. It's a LOT of money though lovely though it is, hence I'd take it out of savings. It's quite an extravagance though.... But at the moment there are 2 young conifers in the spot and two small Rowans. I think at the close of play last night I decided we didn't really need it but I've started thinking about it again, it's magnificent.

Sounds a good price to me...due to the size alone! ;D

Well, you live and learn - one of my books says it needs a more acidic PH to get its reddish colour, another says it is tolerant of most soil conditions but prefers a moist soil. If you get it. you'll be able to confirm which is the most accurate!

I'll have more of a delve into a few more books I think - we live on limestone, are surrounded by limestone, are digging up limestone by the ton, and surprise surprise the soil is REALLY alkaline I'd hate to buy it and spend all that money only to find I needed to dig it up and have it spend eternity in a massive pot, like more than a few of my collection already!! It is a great price and a lovely plant but I think the plants that are growing happily in that spot already are going to stay there. I just wanted something, anything, to put me off it. ;D ;D

The trouble is, if you don't get it, you will go back in a few days time and it will either be gone or double the price.
If you know where it could go, GO FOR IT, you know you want to! They are lovely shrubs grown in the right place.

Hi Mrs. Beige ... I got two Photinia Red Robin babies last year from Aldi, and they're thriving ... and our soil is super-alkaline, so I don't think you have any worries on that score ;D ... cheers ...

Thanks canary, that's very encouraging! If nobody gets there first I think it'll be living with us, very soon.

Have you bought it yet, Mrs B? Keith I rang the GC up yesterday afternoon to confirm the price, as nobody was around at the GC on the day we looked at it. There was still nobody around yesterday afternoon so they took my number and they've just rung and confirmed that it's £50. If I do have it I'll be deciding in the next few minutes and ring them back, or just forget about it.

Though, the ones at Crocus are cheaper, so if you don't want to spend so much, go that route. Is it the plant or price putting you off? Keith

Oh hang on, how big is 80-100cm in inches? I'll go and check. About 39inches max, but £14.95 + delivery in Crocus. I think what's putting me off, if anything, is the extravagance of it all. ;D The GC one is reduced from £79........

Tempting.....that reduction is always a lure.........only you can decide though...ooer

Tempting.....that reduction is always a lure.........only you can decide though...ooer As 4P says, only you can decide. Not sure which way I would go TBH. Not a lot of help, I know! With the GC one, you can see what you are getting, with the Crocus one, you have to trust the quality they will supply, which everyone says is great. Hard choice! I wouldn't have paid £79 for it though!! Keith

Nor me! But even with the reduction I would have to think very hard about buying a plant at that price and it would have to be one that I had always longed for and knew exactly where its perfect home was. And I would still feel guilty! (Sorry MrsB..how very helpful!) ;D
