I've just been given a wire hanging basket but haven't got a lining for it. All my other ones have shop bought linings so I thought I might try and find some kind of substitute instead. I think I read in Amateur Gardening about someone who used old pillow cases for linings - has anyone used anything else?

Old jumpers are good! wool is brilliant and organic..... brown or green are best , other colours end up the same shade eventually.

My one out the front got attacked by the birds, for nesting material, so had to in fill with some moss. Strangely, they didn't like that, prefered the green stuff the liner was made out of!! Alan Titchmarsh did a survey on them and like SL says, the jumper came out on top.

Yes Ive used old jumpers before, and the cocoanut thingy ones the birds love to pull to bits!!I suppose anything that holds the compost in place would do its just what looks alright till things grow but Im not bothering next year as mine are a washout.

Brilliant, The witch, and good price - I LOVE e-Bay!!! And jumpers - that's an excellent idea too, as they'll keep moisture in but let any excess water out - and we'll always have a steady supply too......I'm off for a rummage..... Thanks all! I'm making a note of that seller on e-Bay too The witch, thanks.

I think thick layers of newspaper work very well too Debbie. Maybe a nice patterned woolly jumper with paper on the inside? You could make a design statement and co ordinate your colours....nice magenta mohair woolly and The Times? Very upper class
