Has any one seen it for sale anywhere? I don't mean dried or in little pack from the supermarket BTW - I mean growing in a pot? I haven't been able to find tarragon seeds either.

There are 2 different sorts of Tarragon, The witch. Russian Tarragon (Artemesia dracunculoides) and French Tarragon (Artemsia dracunculus). French Tarragon is the one you want for culinary use. Russian Tarragon is a messy shrubby plant which is a bit of a pain, with few redeeming features really! You can't grow either of them from seed, you have to buy the plant and propagate by root division or cuttings in late Spring. Sometimes it's sold under the name of Estragon too. It's not a common herb though - you may have to buy it from a specialist herb grower - I imagine Jekka MacVicar sells it, for example.

I managed to get some French Tarragon from a local nursery this year...I'll see if I can get a root going for you The witch. I'm not going to the BBQ but I'll be at Barnsdale. Otherwise I could try sending you some in the post ?

I think it was Russian tarragon I had in a pot at my old house, but foolishly I binned it as it need potting on, I can't remember where I bought it from though : The best I have tasted was from Israel, sold in packs ready for use from Sainsbury's - the flavour was wonderful. I will try a google search using the latin name for the French variety you have quoted 4P - thanks for that You are very kind Cheery - thanks a million I may take you up on your offer if I can't find any on the web.

I've not tried ginger myself but have read that it can be quite successful. You don't need to buy any seeds either - you just use a bit of root left over after cooking

Its best grown as a houseplant Emsey, it needs a steady temp, I did it a few years ago, made quite a nice foliage plant too.

I could try some on the kitchen window sill today, they had some really good looking roots for 20p each in robisons today that put the idea into my head, I had 4 big garlic bulbs for 60p too as our have disapeared. The shoots would be usefull in the kitchen too, cant wait till spring, already thinking about christmas and we've not even had a proper summer yet

ohhhh yeaH i LIKE THE SOUND OF THAT!!!! what about parsnips and carrots? You can leave parsnips in the ground, the frost improves the flavour, you are best freezing your carrots or keeping them in a "clamp" for xmas.

If you don't get it on ebay, The witch - I can thoroughly recommend this nursery www.norfolkherbs.co.uk/ContactUs.htmlThe lady who runs it is very knowledgeable and they have a wonderful selection of plants. They do have an mail order and online shop. It's a lovely place!
