Is your area doing anything? Staffordshire are joining in and I'm particularly surprised but excited that LP's school are too. They are having a visit tomorrow so all children have been asked to bring in cut flowers and pots of flowers from their gardens. We've done two "containers" (half a lemonade bottle!) of flowers - one filled with astrantia (which doesn't smell!) and one with pinks, lavender and verbena bonariensis. I just hope lots of other parents make an effort, because the playground looks fab with all the vegetables and stuff that they've been growing.

That's good to hear, Plocket. I hope lots of parents do too - take your camera and take some pics please. It would be lovely to see it all. I haven't heard about anything happening round here. My nearest village is quite picturesque and flowery anyway - the main street has Hollyhocks in nearly every garden so it looks lovely in summer.

Oooh I love hollyhocks - they aren't so keen on my garden though : Parents aren't allowed into school in the mornings but I'll try and remember to take my camera this afternoon. I really do hope people make an effort, but I'm not convinced bunches of flowers in vases will score many points with the judges. Still it's taking part that counts

Not heard about it here P - but most gardens are muddy messes at the moment.

Perhaps it's just a Staffordshire thing then The witch. I'm glad to hear that the water is going down now and I hope it hasn't left your garden in too much of a mess. I asked if I could come in this afternoon to take some photos and LPs teacher was thrilled

I didn't take any photos because so few people had bothered, in LPs class anyway. There were our two pots of flowers, two little arrangements of pinks and one bottle with three little blue flowers in that I couldn't ID. It was rather disappointing from my point of view.

What a shame Plocket...but typical! It's a sad fact that very few parents support their children's school. That's one good thing about having a goodly number of American families from the bases sending their children to local schools - they generally make a real effort for their children. Proportionately many more American parents attend school events than their UK counterparts, and they always bring stacks of sweets!

It's such a shame though because schools need all the support they can get because they don't get enough backing from the Government. There are so few people like you who make such an individual effort, but I would have thought taking a few flowers from the garden, or buying a bunch of something from Somerfield (which backs onto the school - so there's no excuse!) isn't exactly difficult. I don't usually cut my flowers, even for my own house, but I thought the school deserved a bit of effort. I'm going to make a point of asking the Head what the general response was.
