I have completely cleared a narrow bed, approx 12ft long, in front of my Kitchen door, for now its been planted with sunflowers, but over the next seasons I want to fill it with scented, and/or native plants, I have planted two white english lavender bargains there which I bought at GWL, but obviously they arent going to bulk up enough this year or next, to make much of an impact... also a lovely little Potentilla that 4P gave me .....suggestions please, the border has full sun after 12 until nightfall and temperatures rise to ridiculous levels, very very hot, so whatever it is, it needs to be quite tough.

How tall? Or a mixture....scented? Hmm, well Evening Primrose, Hyssop, Catmint, Oregano, Golden Marjoram would all like it there and are all scented and beloved by insects. Native? Small scabious, Scarlet Pimpernel (tiny but lovely), Corn Marigold, OxEye Daisy etc etc. Lots actually but I gotta go - just got a phone call - lots and lots of lettuce to do.......bum! XX

You mean weeds!! Seriously, I would go alongwith 4P's suggestions. Do you have a herb garden? Keith

I'm sure SL has got a herb garden, I know she collects lots of different Mint.
Sweetleaf I'll have a think about some other plants, - What type of soil is it - sandy or clay?

Feverfew - I think it's native. About 2ft high, seeds profusely and has very pretty flowers for ages. Gets bushy quickly too. Centranthus(Red Valerian) bulks up quickly and is a sun worshipper and the insects love it. You see it everywhere so I would have thought that was native too. That small purple mallow you see growing along the hedgerows which gets to about 2ft high, Rosemary, Snow-In-Summer, Curry Plant? They are all sun lovers but whether strictly native I'm not so sure.

I have Feverfew, very nice daisy flowers, apparently good for hangovers too! Self seeds all over, but easy to contain, Rosemary is a good idea, Centranthus will struggle, in my acid soil but its worth trying as I have recently managed to grow Gypsophila Snow in summer? Not familiar with it, is it a regional name? Curry plant? Off to google them to see what they like!

Curry plant is Helichrysum serotinum( got the book open) and Snow-in-Summer is Cerastium Tomentosum, a ground cover/spreader. Dodn't realize your soil was acid though SL, what about Pieris?

I think Pieris would get too big, Debbie the border is narrow and long-ish so ideally Im looking at mid size shrubs and smaller annuals and perrennials, I have taken out Hardy Geraniums as that was all I had there, beautiful thugs arent they? They completely smothered everything else, including the Ladies Mantle, which I have replanted elsewhere.

The Curry plant smells great..... What about Santolina, Cotton Lavender? It'll only flower if it gets enough sun and needs it. Also, what about Lemon Balm? There are some beautiful variegated ones out there, which need sun too. Antirrhinums? Or some low growing conifers or Junipers which need the sun to show off colours to their best ability? What about a pretty mint like Pineapple mint?
