I'm pretty dissatisfied with the flower border atm...and want to rearrange some of the planting....should I wait until the autumn (I may go mad with frustration before then) or can I do it now? as long as I prepare the ground well and water everything before and after?
help!

If your soil is as dry and hard as ours I would not recommend moving anything at present. Howver, in theory there is nothing wrong with moving plants at any time of the year, except when the ground is frozen. As you say, saok 'em first and after and take as much root as you can. Some of the tap rooted things shoukd perhaps be left where they are.

I don't think it's wise reeeally Cheery....the poor plants have struggled enough this year. There's only a short time to wait until they keel over anyway! Unless you're planning on shoving a lot of late flowering stuff in...in which case you could cut everything back and fill in the gaps. I bet your garden look much better than you think anyway - I know you!

TOO LATE!
It was drizzling so I thought it'd be OK...of course the sun came out when I was halfway through....drat it....
I moved a big yellow rudbeckia...took a lot of the surrounding soil with it...put it with the two helenium plants I already had (yellow/orange)...then I moved the gaillardia into the same group and planted my 2 new heleniums amongst them....LOVELY !
I moved the humilis palm THAT was hard work...it was at the back of the border being swamped by geum and geraniums...that's now in a more sunny position...the area I dug it out of was as dry as a dry thing...so hopefully it'll be happier where it is now...
Planted the new agistache with the monarda and hyssop in a group...now they look gorgeous together...next year I plan to grow cerinthe with them as well...
I hacked back the passionflower AGAIN!....then gave everything a good soak...sorted.

Oooer you are very brave CPB - you will have to keep them well watered from now on.

I haven't any real disasters when moving plants this year, and I've done a lot of moving them around in the past few weeks. That's probably more down to the plants' ruggedness rather than my gardening skills - I think that as long as the roots aren't disturbed that much there shouldn't be much of a problem. I don't think that's the recommended theory, especially for trees, but it's worked so far for me.

I did move our cherry tree a few a couple of weeks ago, got it up in one foul swoop and it's very happy in its new spot. I had to do something as it was getting hammered by snails where it was in the first place.

Im in the "If you have to you have to" camp, I have moved a fair few plants this year, the wet weather has made for some very overgrown borders, theres just not as much space as there should be. Im always sure to dig the "receiving" hole before I dig up the plant and I make sure I take as much soil around the roots as possible then firm and water in, half the time Im sure they have no clue they have moved.

I go with Christopher Lloyd, he moved plants as and when he needed too. (or actually to be accurate had them moved!). For the life of me I cannot 'see' in my mind what dormant plants will look like when they are growing and in flower. Far better to move them carefully when you can see the result of their colour and leaf shape and structure? At least then you only move them once!

Good thinking, OB! I knew there was a good, well thought out reason why I move so many plants when I really shouldnt.

Alan Titchmarsh believes in moving plants when ever, if the plant is having problems where it is

Well it's not the best thing to move them now but I'm always one of those who wants things done straight away. If you water them well and regularly they should be ok!

I've been moving stuff again : My lovely fern bed has loved this year's grotty weather and has consequently gone MAD....so I took two ferns out of there (linear male fern and another one..can't remember the type) and put them in the flower bed...up by the house where it's sheltered...south facing, but isn't in full sun. Then I rearranged the remaining ferns, trimming some right back, I plan to take out the tiny maidenhair (deciduous fern) to overwinter it in the conservatory in a small pot. When moving the ferns I took a huge mass of soil with them...that was a few days ago and they seem ok......
