It's a funny thing but I am marooned at home as we only have one car atm and OH has taken it out for the morning....so I have the opportunity to go out in the garden....but I just can't summon up the energy...how contrary is that? I still ache all over from leeking and digging over the weekend but there is sooo much I should do out there.........lazy old cow, she is...... : You certainly aren't 4P - the weather isn't very enticing though is it, well it's not here! It wasn't great here, either, but I managed to get in about an hours weeding late on, before I did dinner.

I managed to get out into the garden today after 2 weeks neglect! (holiday and being ill) Took everything out of the GH, used Jeyes Fluid to wash down the glass, staging and empty pots. Harvested the rest of the cape gooseberries, pepinos and dug up the parsnips (OH wants to move the veg bed AGAIN!). Cut back the oregano, applemint, chocolate peppermint, rosemary, thyme, curled parsley, savoury, chives, sweet marjoram, and French tarragon. Took root cuttings of the mints and tarragon in case they don't survive the winter (the herb raised bed is very sheltered) Then mulched the herb bed with compost. It looks better now. Cut back the red banana and put the big pot in the GH under a fleece tent. Picked some apples. Saw that the brugmansia cutting that Sweetie gave me has got great big buds on it! cor. It was really windy, but I was bundled up in my fleece...only came in when my back gave out. fantastic....

Well done, Cheery - it's soo nice to get in the garden isn't it? I felt quite rufty tufty this morning so despite the torrential rain I went out to do some urgent jobs - planted the garlic and onions and got some bulbs in the ground - alliums and bluebells. And managed get round to planting the Heucheras that have been waiting in pots for ages.....it's much warmer than yesterday at least but I got drenched! I spent a long time in the GH yesterday too - potting up about 100 pansy, violets, violas and primulas etc ready to take down the village to sell (hopefully). And I potted up all the rooted cuttings - Sage, Rosemary, Sleepy's lovely dark Hebe and some poor old Auriculas and Primroses that look a bit rough but will hopefully perk up now. Despite the wind and cold it was really quite cosy in the GH.

I'm in limbo atm...the flower border is still going strong so I won't clear it until the first frosts kill off the annuals...and the perennials waiting to go into the border are at present in the veg patch as they outgrew their pots. So OH can't get started on moving the veg patch yet.

Whilst splashing about the garden this morning I noticed I have Grape Hyacinths up with over 2" of leaf showing! Still got daffodils, more Alliums and another lot of something I can't think remeber the name of!

Last night we had a frost, and this morning the temp was very low..1degree c till 10 o`clock, struggling to get to 13c during the day, the result was evident when I had a look around this evening, the Brugmansia which had more flowers on it than ever before, is badly affected, the fuschias had all the blooms nipped, a tragedy when it comes to Lady Boothby,( Im so impressed with her, stunning she is!) Overnight the flowers on the sedums have turned a glorious red, and the buds remaining on the roses are all brown and squishy, the garden is looking a bit sad. on the plus side, the Hellebores are looking healthy and for some reason so are the Pelargoniums, perhaps they were protected by all the lush growth that threatens to swamp them, atm. Hardy Geraniums are very ENTHUSIASTIC in their growth habits arent they? I shall look for someone to palm a lot off on......errr, give them to, out of the generosity of my heart,

Yesterday, Monday, I started thinning out the BIG ivy we have. Started, being the operative word!! I had an empty green wheelie bin and I filled it in no time. Yes it was all shredded first, before anyone asks! I finished in the half light, with still lots to cut down. It's about 10ft high in places! I didn't get all of what I did cut down, shredded and today with the wet weather, decided to leave it. Hope it's better tomorrow, so I can finish it off, though it means going up a ladder, which I have been told in the past, I shouldn't do on my own. If I'm up there and have a fit, who would I sue anyway!!

I've been busy in the garden today The cosmos, lovely as the are, have swamped everything else in the border...they're HUGE...so OH and I decided to take them out...some were 6' tall! we filled half a compost bin and 2 bin bags..after I'd cut myself 3 vases of flowers off the plants. The soil in the flower border is sooooooo dry so we ran the hose on it before I start digging it and adding mulch, I want to clear the lot out tbh as everything looks higgledy piggledy now...some stuff's still flowering like mad...some stuff's died back. I dug up a big lupin root and potted it up (they never seem to survive in the ground in my garden over winter) Then pulled the calla out of it's big pot...split the bulbs apart as the three small bulbs are now one MASSIVE HUGE one and 5 relatively outsized ones...keeping a few to dry and pass out to family, the rest were repotted in inividual pots of fresh compost and placed in the CF dressed with some grit. Moved a couple of perennials too, there's still loads to do but guess what? I've got the day off tomorrow YAY!

Got a fair bit done in the garden myself today, it looks much better, had a shift round of the garden furniture, and the bit with the recycling boxes and Guinea pig hutch. We took the fence down around the decking to open up the garden a bit, I put a few bulbs in and potted up some sage, rosemary and mint. Sean mowed the lawn! All in all a good day for me. Its good for the soul isn't it Cheery.

I did post this yesterday. Tried to modify and messed it up so deleted the post. Spent most of the day in the garden yesterday. Moved my grasses that were too tall for their position. Took some cuttings. Spread some compost around the garden. Cut down a Buddleja in the front garden that grows so big I can't get in and out of the car. Today OH and son got the roots out of the Buddleja, it took a pick axe to get it out. I was joined by a friendly Robin. I took a pic and have posted on the Bird thread. A very rewarding weekend and the weather was gorgeous. ;D

I spent sometime clearing the remaining annuals and cutting back some plants that have outgrown their allotted space. Thought of clearing the Sweetpeas but decided to leave them until the frosts arrive. They are still growing strong with many flowers yet to come. I have been very pleased with them especially as they are mainly in the shade and I only put Chicken Pellets round them and forked that in. Cleared out the Containers with Summer plants and then finished off by planting my remaining miniature Daffodil/Narcissi Bulbs and Red Riding Hood Tulips. Planted two Acers in larger Containers-- A General tidy around, swept the path-and re-arranged the Containers-- Very satifying afternoon altogether--Bigs

Gosh, you have been a busy bunny Biggles it is quite satisfying tho isn't it? having a good old clear out. Today I did much the same thing as you did. Clearing out, cutting back and moving plants. I planted the pansies as well...de-heading them and applying a liberal sprinkling of advanced organic slug pellets. We have an old water tank (black plastic) that had osteospermums, pelargoniums and coleus in. After taking a few cuttings I cleared that out and filled it with pansies and violas. As an extra precaution against the dreaded slug and snail attack I also wiped the sides of the tank with a piece of kitchen roll soaked in washing up liquid. It worked on the pot-grown salad stuff so hopefully it'll work on this too. I cut the leaves off the musa basjoo plants, and cut off the trunks to about 4 ft, built a large chicken-wire fence around it and stuffed this with barley straw. Topped this off with fleece and popped a tray on top to keep out the wet...bye bye banana plants until next spring.....

Very satisfying--I feel quite smug now especially as it is blowing a gale and heavy showers in between. All the 'tall' plants had been either cut down or taken out--so no damage done. Hope your Banana plants appreciates its lovely warm Winter 'tuck in' ;D I am hoping to get some Banana seed to grow one--but that will have to wait till next Spring-I haven't got a Greenhouse now--only window ledges Bye for now--Have a good day --See you later--Bigs

Bigs, I'm well impressed that you still have sweet peas...
I harvested the carrots, french beans and baby beetroot that I sowed very late and didn't really expect anything so it was a bonus.
Dug over another area and planted broad beans.
Bought all the tender bits into the greenhouse (and some of them are pretty big) for the winter.
Potted up 8 large pots with bulbs for spring.
Dug over half the old strawberry bed and replanted the strawberries 3 to a large pot. I want to finish that on Saturday and plant sweet williams in there.
At the end of all that I was totally knackered....

We've been waiting to do this because they were flowering so happily but we may get snow / sleet tomorrow and so we dug out the Brugmansia trees. Mike was digging up the Brugmansia in the front garden. I had the arduous task of stripping leaves off of some cut branches and putting them in water. And all was fine and dandy until I heard ....
Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Lydia! Beautiful day!
Ewwww! It's the Toxic One! Ewwwww! Ignore. Ignore. Ignore.
That's a stunning tree. I've admired it all summer.
Ignore! Ignore! Ignore!
Do you think you could give me a cutting so I could root one?
~~~~~> "I'd rather eat maggots!"
Mike couldn't help but start laughing as my blood pressure was rising after breaking down and replying to the Toxic One.
She went back into her lair after that. Hmmmm. Imagine that. Was it something I said?
Is it getting warmer? Evil Me
