75s not that old The witch there was a 90 something old man on the news the other day has just retired from doing the gardens of a stately homeQQ he is just going to concentrate on his own now which was kept lovely he was forking over his Veg plot. Why I say 75s not old my OH is just 5 years short of that and he works the same as he always has! maybe I should be telling him to slow down.

No I know you were,nt The witch he does do well on his own! but it made me think I forget that maybe John shouldnt do the things that he does, he is forever helping out our kids and he thinks nothing of pulling places to bits and rebuilding them.

Ron can't walk very well these days, he uses two sticks, or a stick and a spade or hoe depending on what he's up to. He has worked on the land all of his life. He doesn't drive, well he does drive his small tractor, but has never owned a car. He knows nothing about companion planting. I gave him some marigold seedlings 3 years ago to grow in his greenhouses, (he's got 3), to control white fly, he keeps the seeds from them now to use each year. He didn't know that carrot fly don't fly higher than about 2 foot, so he now surrounds his carrots with fleece. Each spring a local farmer ploughs Ron's land for him, as Ron can only plough in one direction. Ron grows all types of veg on his land for his relatives and close friends, he also sells his veg from a small stall he sets up each year next to his house.

Now THAT'S what I call a passion for gardening! Who needs a car when you've got all you want right there in the back garden?

OH heard a strange noise this afternoon, he couldn't quite work out what he could hear though, it sounded like someone calling from Ron's land, a sort of mumbled "help, help". OH followed to the sound, it was indeed coming from somewhere on Ron's land. OH couldn't see Ron though, the calling got louder as OH neared one of Ron's 3 GHs...... and there was Ron, he had fallen over in his GH while planting out his tomato seedlings. OH couldn't pull Ron to his feet due to his left arm being in plaster. OH called on Ron's nearest neighbours, who took ages to answer their door, as they were dozing after a heavy lunch : Ron doesn't know how long he had been laying on his GH floor though - it's not the first time he's fallen over while trying to look after "his land". He should really hang up his spade but I've no idea what Ron would do with his time. He has worked on the land all of his life, it's the reason he gets up in the morning! OH and neighbour helped Ron back to his house, sat him down in his conservatory and stayed with him until his wife gave him a much needed cup of tea.

I suppose he could easily fall into the glass. But good on him for carrying on - it's clearly what he lives for Good job you heard him or he might have been there all night. Would it be worth you looking to see if he is OK before you leave each time? Maybe others could too. Next time he might bang his head and be unconcious, and not be able to call for help.

Oh heck The witch you are going to worry about him when you move somebody is going to have to have a word maybe you could surjest he carry a mobile phone on his belt in case he has another fall. You know my Father-in-law had a stroke in his greenhouse, I think that they are so engrosed in what they are doing they ignore feeling unwell.

My MIL has a panic button on a necklace if she pushes the button help is summoned...... it works via the phone line, perhaps something like that would be good for Ron?

My mum used to fit these they are liked to a cental controll system and they are a great help they call them lifelines. She fitted one at home after dad had his heart attack, so if he had an accident when she was at work it would go to the call centre were she worked.

Great idea, but his hands are riddled with arthritis and his eye sight is very poor so a mobile would be out of the question. Because the village is in a dip only 2 mobile networks get a good signal I think Ron's wife will have to keep a closer eye on him rather than day time TV.
