It's taken me all morning but I've finally cleared up the area under the silver birches. It may not look like much to you tidy gardeners but it's been winding me up all winter as I look out of my kitchen window! I put down weed suppressing fabric and bark years ago and it's gradually got more and more weedy and nettle ridden. Plus the rats were burrowing under the mat . Now it's been ripped up, weeded and I've started to bury my bulb pots in there. Only daffs at the moment but I've got several other sorts to add. Those lovely dark Tulips can go in there when I've got some more energy. Sooo nice to actually get something done.

Well, I'm absolutely b******d. This afternoon I've been helping my Mum trim her Rosa rugosa hedge. There were yet more nettles all around the base, some with roots as thick as my fingers.....crunchie, it was hard work. I willingly help my mother but I do feel slightly aggrieved that no one else in my family ever does any of her garden for her. Neither of my sisters ever go out and help her. I have a big garden myself that's getting more and more overgrown. Don't I sound like a moaning myrtle? Sorry! And (another moan) I had a look at my Dark as the Night Tulips and they look bright red to me. Humph. Still my Harebells have started to germinate. And the repotted plants look really well in the PT. And it has been a beautiful first day of Spring

It looks great 4P and I bet you are thrilled after a good day in the garden. As for your tulips - is it the buds you are looking at? My Black Parrots and Queen of the Night often look reddish before they bloom. Fingers crossed they will be dark for you. Oooh you are early with your Harebells - my packet says to sow in April. Perhaps I'll start them off so I can catch up with you!!!

Did I write Dark as the Night? I meant Queen of the Night! Brains not very well connected to my fingers...I hope they do come out dark then - thanks, Plocket. I'm sure it's fine to sow your Harebells now btw. I always sow a bit too early 'cos I love seeds and I just can't wait. My silver Birch bed is nothing special but it was SUCH a mess before...if I can keep the nettles down I want to plant some more stuff like Alkanet, Pulmonaria, Jacob's Ladder etc there so it looks quite wild but is prettier than nettles!
