I'm sorry to bring this up but I've a dilema: This morning LP and I discovered that the cat has been using LP's garden as a toilet (I've refrained from using the words I feel like using ) I've dug out loads of compost and c**p, but I don't know whether I should get rid of all the compost and replace it (nearly 500 litres!) or leave it and hope that the rain will wash any nasties away. What should I do? LP wants to grow vegetables in her garden!

Cat poo can contain some nasties but Im sure LP will wash her hands and any veggies wont she? I think you should be ok, if you have removed the faeces.. get LP to wear gloves like a proper gardener, and dont let her eat anything unwashed.

I don't think you need worry about it Plocket, especially if LP wears gloves to garden, which is recommended for everyone gardening if they are aware cats are using their garden as a toilet. I always wear gardening gloves, not because I have two cats you understand, I just can't bear the thought of touching worms! Perhaps you could cover the soil with some chicken wire to discourage Poppy

What's wrong with worms??? Which reminds me I must harvest my compost from the wormery ;D
We always wear gloves in the garden The witch but thanks for that thought. I've put some mesh over the planter and it hasn't been disturbed since yesterday morning so hopefully Poppy has got the message. I hope we can start sowing carrots soon!

Sounds promising Plocket! Even with gloves it's much better getting Poppy to go elsewhere rather than having to keep unearthing her 'presents'. That would make me neurotic in the long run.

She can go elsewhere in the garden - where I know she does her toilet and where I'm not going to be planting vegetables!!! It's a bit of a dilema for me Mrs B because although I'm glad she's not digging up my neighbours' gardens, I don't want her using LP's garden. I accept that she poops in my garden and I regularly go round with a plastic bag, dig up the offending stuff, and put it in the dustbin. It's part of my responsibility for my cat.

Unless like me, you mainly used other things other than worms or maggots. I have only used gardening gloves since I was in Oakham. I don't like gloves for normal gardening (other than heavy digging) but when we lived there, we realised someone before us must have had had a 'smashing' time, as I kept finding bits of broken glass within the soil. Or should I say my fingers kept finding the glass! Ouch It wasn't just in one part of the garden either, but all over, so what went on I don't know. Keith
