Split from: The witch%27s+garden+-+comments+I am thinking about a pergola like construction so I can sit by the house without getting wet when it rains. Unfortunately I not only want it to go with the house but it also has to leave room for cleaning the windows upstairs and give the possibility to get out of the door dry. Somehow I can't come up with a nice idea that caters for all these wishes. How about something like this Dutchy? (it's the best I could do using Paint, please disregard the scale). i33.photobucket.com/albums/d75/The witch-in-Norfolk/Bits%20and%20bobs/Dutchy.jpg[/IMG] You got me thinking Dutchy, about my longing for the opportunity to create a Laburnum growing like the one in the second photo in this link

Nice ones The witch, Unfortunately they do not go with my house. I do not have a normal door but a huge sliding one which sits on the left. Also the kitchen protrudes 3 meters from the rest of the back. I would like to be able to grow things up against it but I also want it to have a roof. The place never gets sun but me being a shadow lover spend a lot of time there over looking my greens ;D I am off to Austria now so I will get back to you in a weeks time. Thank you Dutchy

Had a nice time The witch thanks. Did spend some time on a none to picturesque toilet due to a stomach flu but never the less had a great holiday. In the mean time I have been thinking about how to get a place where I can sit outside when it rains without getting wet or sacrificing any of my plants. I am about to do some serious digging in the attic for the plan I drew 10 years ago for the garden. By the time I find it I will a) remove the cobwebs from my hair and face and b) let you know. Maybe there is a solution for my desire to sit outside when it is warm yet raining. I Love the smell of ozone

I found the plan. Not all was realized. The big tree went back wards a bit and a lot of gravel became plant space. But it gives you an insight into what the garden is like and how things are from the house. I have been thinking about a large umbrella like construction. Not a normal one as that would never survive the winds here. I intend for the thing to be there permanently. Yes I am too lazy to be dragging an umbrella out, just like I hate fighting with the 3meter parasol. The sail like thing Sweetleaf suggested got me thinking. I nipped over to the outdoor living shop nearby. Just the place where you can spend your own weight in gold on simple ( .... ) garden furniture. They had this thing. It is 3 by 3.65 meter. It is just four posts with connecting beams at the top and a fold-able cloth with pulley system in between. It looked absolutely fab and at Euro 399 not lethal to my wallet. Only drawback is that it is made to keep the sun out not the rain. It will take a single downpour as long as you leave it open to dry. When it is not used you can "close" it so the cloth hangs safely on one side and does not get blown to bits. The posts can be fastened to the ground. In all it looks good so now I have to think hard if this is really what I want.

That looks great, Dutchy!.... you could always treat it with the same stuff they sell in camping shops to waterproof canvas tents, you spray it on to dry cloth and when it dries its shower, and mould resistant, and the more expensive version imparts some UV protection. ;D

Yes it does sound good. The bit about it going water proof and mould resistant is exactly what I need. No sunshine where I want it. I do worry that the act of closing and opening will lessen the working of the spray but I'll find out about that. All I need to do is start nagging my OH for it. Although he saw the construction and actually liked the look. Halfway there already Big things like this I want to be liked by us both or it does not get in.

Does it work the other way though Dutchy? If he likes something and you dont? It doesnt here, OH gets his own way no matter what. ;D

Nah. I am a tough one. But then again he never came up with a big project for the garden. He sees it as my playing ground, something to keep me off the street ;D. He does occasionally dumps wood for the fire in places where I don't want it and is sometimes not so careful when chopping. I give him an earful, he gives me a hug and I get to buy a new plant. Not bad eh?

Not bad at all! ;D ;D My OH keeps bringing junk home in the hope that I will like it, occasionally he is right, mostly I have to tactfully suggest I havent the room for it, he brought me a victorian chimney pot for instance that I do like and a victorian toilet, with very ornate decoration..... it makes a strange, quirky planter, after some serious disinfection. But on the downside he also brings stuff that I find to be complete junk......the latest being a fibreglass pillar which blows down in the wind. It just went to the tip after a grumpy face and several months of sulking!

Dutchy - could you make a very large umbrella out of "living willow"?

;D ;D ;D to both bogplants and an overgrown willow umbrella.
Lovely ideas both. The witch, I have been looking hard at the site and know I want my rainshelter for about 5 days per year. So your suggestion of using a whopping big umbrella is going to win but I will not place it permanently just when it is very warm and raining.
