I've been trying to cut down on the chemicals we use in the house, so have started using Soda Crystals. The leaflet I got with them suggest that a solution using soda crystals and other ingredients can be used against greenfly, mildew and blackspot - has anyone tried this and does it actually work?

I'd be cautious P. I use soda crystals to keep my drains clear!. Diluted washing-up liquid would be safer against greenfly, and pruning to encourage air circulation is best for mildew and blackspot (bowl shape).

I agree. I expect it does work but does the plant survive?? It would have to be a VERY dilute solution. Soda crystals are wonderful things though - a friend of mine swears they keep her kids school tops whiter even on a low temp wash.

Well for greenfly they suggest 4oz soapflakes and 2oz soda crystals with two gallons of water - that's a pretty weak solution. And for mildew and blackspot they recommend 1 cup of milk and 2oz soda crystals with 1 gallon of water. It just seems so much easier than buying chemicals!

It is. My daughter has a wonderful book about chemical free household cleaning. Basically you can do anything with Bicarbonate of soda, vinegar and lemons. She says it's true too.

I would too! My friend was warbling on about how brilliant Soda Crystals were, which is how I started to use them. I didn't realise they could be used in the garden on plants though!
