I was in my GH today and it looks like the stem of my banana might have got frosted I made a fleece tent in there tonight, covering the banana and tree fern (which looks OK at present) It was -9 here in the night...-4 this morning ...sposed to be getting down to -10 tonight ....I think I'll go and wrap some sacking around the pots... ;D Anybody else ?

Yikes Cheery - is there somewhere not quite so cold you could put it just in case it was just the outside that was damaged? I've put fleece over our new roses because they won't have had a chance to get established yet, but I'll still worry. Anything else is just going to have to weather the weather. My really tender Pennisetum Setaceum "Rubrum" has been in the kitchen for a few months now and won't be going out for a few months more ;D

No room for the banana in the conservatory...it's already stuffed full of palms, tender bananas, ferns and other tender plants..ooh I'm glad I moved my gerbera in there!...The big banana in the GH is 5 ft tall and in an humungous pot that I had to drag to get in the GH I've already removed most of the leaves and tonight had to chop off the one that was left along with the baby ones around the root stock as they'd turned brown! I don't want to loose it as it's the one I bought from Heligan (it was 6" tall!) BUT like you say...it just has to take it's chances. I think we've also lost the herbs in pots that are arranged on top of the compost bin (which is usually warmish) got 4 little lavenders, 3 mints and 3 rosemary's aw....

Was that -9 inside or outside the greenhouse? What variety of banana is it? Frost is helping me atm. With that border I have dug, it should be breaking down the clods of clay, nicely.

Hi Madon....the GH one is the 'hardy banana' musa basjoo. The root stock is pretty hardy buit the stem's probably lost. My OH wants it to be tall so we've been conserving the trunk every winter....just removing the leaves (it grows loads in the summer)

I've been busy sorting out in the GH (desperately trying to make it bigger inside even if I can't make it bigger outside...) Found that my tea tree and 2 bonsai are b*ggered. Didn't really like the tea tree so that wasn't a problem...but it was sad to chuck the bonsai...had them for years...I really didn't look after them properly this winter and let them get too wet then too cold.... I think it was that cold snap a few weeks ago that finished them off..oh well I'LL JUST HAVE TO GO TO A GC AND BUY SOMMAT ELSE ;D to take their place

Rosemary and Lavender are notorious for snuffing it over winter, they hate the wet but don't give up on the mint yet. It's as tough as old boots - if there are white roots in the pot, it'll prolly be ok.
