SAT APRIL 4TH 2009
We wont talk about what went on before, but at 2pm we were placed into a cage and put in a car with a blanket over us, and we began the journey to our new home. All the family were there to greet us, it was a bit noisy but their hearts were in the right place. Our cage was put inside a small run, and the door was opened, we weren't sure about leaving the cage (already more spacious than anything we'd ever known) one by one with a little help we all got out. To scratch the bare earth was such bliss! They are other hoity toity birds here, they pace backwards and forwards around our pen making threats! Boc boc boc warning calls every now and then. My new owner is a bit worried the neighbours will get fed up of us, but its early days. We've all been given names! Elvis, Sandy Cheeks, Audrey, slipknot and Franny, we now know the other girls are Flossie, Daisy and Edna. As it starts getting dark, the other girls go into a little house, we're not sure what to do, then our new owner and her husband come out and pick us up one by one, we don't make this easy for them squirt our red raw bottoms with something called anti peck spray, and put us into the Hen house with the other girls, they listen outside for a bit but everyone is far too tired to play up, we've all had a busy day.
SUN 5TH APRIL 2009
Our new owner is up at first light, she's barely slept worrying we've spent the whole night fighting, but to be honest, all is quiet and the first we know its daybreak is when the pop hole shoots up. The oldies shoot outside and start having a jolly good scratch about, we're not sure what to do, so we mill about in the HH for a bit pecking at the lovely comfy straw stuff, they never had this at the farm. Our new owner watches us through the roof for a while, then decided to steer us out using a broom! One by one we clumsily jump down the step and blink as we look around, it wasn't a dream, one by one that is except Elvis who somehow got herself stuck in the nest box area and was flapping around in a panic! Emsey got her out in the end. Emsey was ohhhing and arring at the fact we were all getting on, I heard her say under her breath, separate sepershmate, what do the experts know, my birds are far more civilized than anyone else's, I feel bad about keeping the hens apart in a small run for two weeks, they're getting on! I'll leave them all too it!' I think she was about to go off and get her camera, when the trouble started, I cant really say who started it, or even how it started but 2 birds, an oldie and a newbie had a noisy set too, the oldie fluffed up her feathers, and the newbie would've done the same if she'd had any, they made a tremendous racket, and were stamping on each others heads, more fierce than any fighting cock, Emsey separated the dueling pair and put one in the run, by now a couple more frights has started, Emsey didn't know which way to turn first, scooping hens up left right and centre, we were running away from her and the oldies, getting ourselves into tight corners so Emsey would snag her jammies on the shrubs as she caught us and we made as much noise as we could too. I dont think we'll be living in a chicken utopia just yet. We made lots of noise all morning and all laid an egg each We settled down by afternoon. Tho, when it started getting dark, we were lifted into the HH, the oldies made a mild protest but we soon settled down.
MON 6TH APRIL
The pop hole opened and the oldies walked straight outside, we are getting the hang of this and plopped down the step, one by one, where we were scooped up and put into the run, before there was any drama. We are keeping it low key and quiet so far today.
