I didnt check the name of the Thread FB Em tell me a bit more about this - what is the history of the hens - and how did you come by them If you didnt rescue them what would happen to them - and will you keep them for egg laying Sorry for all these Q's but am really interested Ofcourse I don't mind all the q's Jenny, the hens are my favorite subject! My friends call me Sam Dingle I got my first 4 ex battery hens back in Feb 08. I've enjoyed having them, and know the house my OH made (see the 'my new henhouse thread in this section) was big enough for more hens, so i've been thinking about increasing the flock for a while. One of the hens, died a couple of weeks ago which was sad but I knew she's had a happy 12 months, scratching about in my garden, so i sort of felt happy too. Rescue day for these hens is also slaughter day for many. They reach their sell by date according to battery farmers when the reach 12 months, they are starved for a day and then slaughtered and put into cheapo pies, chicken nuggets etc, or pet food, unless an organisation like the BHWT step in and help, they have rescues all over the country, usally about 500 every 6 weeks in the west mids, not sure about elsewhere. they have lots of info on their website. In my case a lovely couple pick them up from where ever and take them to their farm, they cut the hens claws if they need it, as they often do, they've only ever stood on mesh, in cages stacked up on top of each other, less than an a4 space each to move. the hens are then collected by their new owners right away, so all the stress is over and done with asap. So the girls I got yesterday, had never stood on solid ground, had never walked, never seen daylight, and it would've stayed that way if it wasn't for the BHWT! They were starving and could barely move as they have no muscle tone. I wish I couldv've shown you the vid of them coming out of the cage, but its just too long, I'm trying to upload a shorter one. The eggs are a delicious bonus, but they'll stay here weather they lay or not They have all laid today! the quality will improve over time, they're like cheap non free range eggs ATM. They are designed to be laying machines, and laid to a degree all through the winter, when I believe posher birds shut up shop. ;D I've never had hens before last Feb, but they are quite easy to look after, my garden isn't massive, the area they have is about 17ft by 21 ft, then there is the shed and the GH and space between, so its a bit more than that really. they do wreck plants, grass everything tho, so I keep them contained there ;D Here is a shorted video of them i took yesterday, I've tried to capture the contrast between both sets of hens. Here is a link to the BHWT bhwt.org.uk/
