I saw a thrush in our garden today and was pleased as I thought these birds are getting rare, does anyone know if this is right. Also any tips on how to keep pigeons off bird tables, I feed the birds with seed but two big pigeons keep coming down and eating all the seed. I dont mind feeding them but the other birds dont have a chance.

I think their rare Jen its a while since Ive seen one! I know what you mean about ,well its the grey doves in ours that even push themselves into the small bird table , but they dont touch the hanging bird feeders or fat balls so youll have to get one of them feeders with just hooks for next winter the small birds are fine clearing the roses and trees of greenfly and such.

I have seen a Thrush--and I think its 'Mate' so hopefully there might be little ones--(if the Black Cat doesn't get it)

The birds do get used to being fed and will, apparently, come at a similar time each day. Ours wait for me in the morning!

Hello BM I started feeding them during the winter as know its hard for them to find food then. I am going to continue it on though if they get used to it. Weve never had so many different types of birds in our garden until I started feeding them.

Just finding this thread nowTulip. I've had 2 Mistle Thrush visiting for some time. It's taken me ages to get birds to come into my garden and I'm the only one in the street they visit. I've got feeders all over the place and on the ground. For about 2 weeks before I went on hols, only 1 thrush was coming. The day we left both of them came for a feed. Now there are none at all coming and the Mr & Mrs Blackbird seem to have taken control of the garden and bird table. I find that the pigeons can't get at the food on my tabke because of the roof on it, thankfully. The ground feeders I have put into the flower beds at the bottom of the garden so the pegeons won't tramp through the plants to get to them like the blackbirds do.

LG we have a pair of wood pigeons that can get on our bird table, once theyve both visited there is no seed left for all the other birds. I still see the thrush in our garden but we also have a pair of blackbirds I hope they dont chase ours away.

I havent seen a thrush for ages, yesterday when we were sat in the garden the blackbird was on the greenhouse going mad! and the fat pigeon was sat on the fir tree behind us then it swooped into the other fir and the female blackie shot out I stood up and clapped my hands and the flamer shot out and flew away!!! he must have been at the blackbirds nest! I know you shouldnt interfere but he can get in the fields and eat corn. Now Im wondering we seem to have loads of white collared Doves! are these the reason we are seing less of the thrushes and blackbirds? the blue tits are safe in their boxes.

There is a family of song thrush that has staked a claim on a large tree near my garden for the last 5 years. Since my initial error, I am now obliged to supply lots of snails stuck to duct tape on the top of my fence each evening. This is not difficult as my neighbour seems hell-bent on breeding slugs and snails. If I fail to supply a slimy breakfast, I get a very early rude awakening.

What a wonderful idea Dave - the thrushes get fed, you get rid of the snails and have the joy of them in your garden - a winning solution! Worth being woken up early for I reckon!
